Drew Brees sets another record and Vaccaro talks Jenkins/Harper

METAIRIE, La. -- Drew Brees set another NFL record on Sunday night, becoming the league’s all-time leader in completion percentage at 66.06 percent. But as the New Orleans Saints’ quarterback was quick to point out, that’s the kind of record you have to maintain.

“I wasn’t aware of that. I know this, that can go down if the completion percentage goes down,” said Brees, who inched past former record holder Chad Pennington by going a perfect 11-for-11 in the second half of Sunday night’s 44-23 victory over the Green Bay Packers.

Brees also correctly pointed out that his Sunday night opponent, Aaron Rodgers, is breathing down his neck in that category (with a career completion percentage of 65.96 percent). Peyton Manning ranks fourth all time at 65.56 percent.

“There’s a lot of football left to be played,” Brees said. “I’m just thinking about how to get a win this week.”

So far, Brees’ 2014 completion percentage of 69.5 percent is the third best of his career. He previously set the NFL single-season record for completion percentage in both 2009 (70.62 percent) and 2011 (71.23 percent).

Vaccaro-Jenkins tension: Saints safety Kenny Vaccaro praised the way that former Saints veteran Roman Harper was “selfless” and helpful to him last season even though Vaccaro’s first-round draft status presumably threatened Harper’s job security.

On the flip side, Vaccaro told The Advocate’s Ramon Antonio Vargas that it wasn’t the same case with former Saints veteran Malcolm Jenkins, whom Vaccaro felt was less welcoming.

Harper is now with the rival Carolina Panthers, who will host his former team on Thursday night. Look for more on the reunion later.
