Sean Payton talks about overtime loss to 49ers

“It was obviously a difficult loss. We were able to fight back in the second half and kind of get back in the game and in the end weren't able to make enough plays. We kind of had it back and forth a bit, certainly for the last quarter, but credit San Francisco for coming away with win. We'll watch this tape tomorrow and try to get this thing behind us as soon as we can.”

On the 51-yard completion by San Francisco late in regulation:

“Well, without seeing film, it’s a scramble. I really have to look at the tape, but obviously the play is extended, he steps and finds a receiver late down the field so without seeing it on tape it is kind of hard to guess because it’s a broken play. We'll look at that and try to get it cleaned up. Obviously, it was a pretty significant play; there were a number of them.”

On broken plays making it more difficult for the cornerbacks:

“You have coverage areas and those are good for 3-4 seconds and then everyone scatters at that point to different spots and that gets a little contorted. Does that make sense? That's hard, it’s hard when all of the sudden there are seven or eight seconds it’s hard to keep your coverage integrity.”

On having a lot of close games of late not going his way:

“There is nothing to put our finger on, nothing specific we’ve had some go our way just like a year ago so you just have to keep trekking.”

On if he considered going for it on fourth down in overtime:

“Yes, I was kind of running out of fourth down plays though. In all seriousness, when you go for it on fourth you probably have something you like and you spend some time on it. Honestly, there are a handful of plays but I don't think there were any that seemed like the right thing to do based on what we were looking at, but that was the one of many.”

100% agree
You cannot turn the ball over three times (Gifting 7pts on one, costing at least 3pts to yourself on the other) and expect to win games

Sick of hearing the same crap every week

"We'll try to get it cleaned up"

Such a disappointing season, tough to watch every week when you know that despite the struggles during the game, one play in the 59th minute will seal the defeat.

Many times Bouldin was our best player. I hope we practice on awareness this week. We had them pinned with a great kick but slid 5 yards in the endzone with it. Nonsense. Then the push off. You can get away with it sometimes but not when everyone is watching the final gasp of the game.

Im tired of third and short and we are passing instead of running. Sean needs to stop all the predictable play calling when the run game is good as it is. I never thought Ingram would break 100 years against San Francisco cuz we haven't done so since Harbaugh has been coaching them and yet just like candy to a kid Sean has to pass the ball at the worst time.

I thought the same thing especially in OT. Ingram gets 4 yds. then the next play Brees has an empty backfield, not much more predictable than an empty backfield. At least we could have lined up with Ingram in the backfield to keep them in tighter.

too dam predictable been saying it a long time. he needs to change his ways which is hard for anyone, so we keep relying on our HOFer and pin it on a scapegoat.

Turnovers.

Spotting them 14.

Clawing back for a lead then giving it away again.

This is 2014 Saints football.

2014 season in a nutshell

Losing the same way every game and still unable to fix the same issues that haunt us every week.

It's been painful to watch.

Almost seems like a mental issue now.

I think it all starts with training camp, no mental toughness to close out games because the players had it easy in greenbrier.

The team that trained in NOLA in sweltering heat never let up off the gas pedal

now i would agree with you except for one fact. The WR came open from the opposite side of the field than the direction of the scramble. in a case like that the cover man should have never let the WR run free especially when the WR turned his route to the middle of the field closing the gap between the QB and himself. The WR did his job. go deep and work your way towards the opposite side of the field.

So the cover assignment was blown. the CB opposite should stay with his man till the QB crosses the line of scrimmage then take the best angle to put himself between the goal line and the QB to make a play.

Rolling coverage on a busted play is standard. everything is not suppose to fall apart. He is suppose to be among the last line of defense to prevent a TD. this breaking down does not fly. this is pee-wee football stuff

He blew the assignment. I wish i recorded the game. who was the numb nut? :???:

Tough to determine. White? Vaccaro? You could lump them together? Whomever was to blame, that was a face-palm moment.

It was a mixture of both vaccaro and whites fault

Corey white played the short zone and left crabtree for Vaccaro, but no one covered Vernon Davis in the middle of the field (white should have had him because he was closest and not covering anyone)
Instead Vaccaro saw Kaep scramble and Davis completely wide open and came flying down to cover Davis, leaving Crabtree completely wide open.

Seems Vaccaro should have picked up the WR after White but who knows.

Re: Sean Payton talks about overtime loss to 49ers

Safety should never let anyone get behind him while the QB is behind the line, cardinal rule.
Allowing 7 or 8 seconds for a play to develop anyway was a killer.

It's over though, add it to the "ways they have blown games" list for the season and make sure it doesn't happen again. Play mistake free, take command of this division, and try to get on a role through the playoffs.
