New Orleans Saints sign RB Brian Leonard - ESPN

METAIRIE, La. -- The New Orleans Saints signed versatile veteran running back Brian Leonard, according to his agent, Mike McCartney. The team has not yet announced a corresponding roster move.

The Saints have been thin at running back with Khiry Robinson (arm) and Pierre Thomas (shoulder, rib) nursing injuries. And backup Edwin Baker was knocked out of last Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers with a concussion.

Leonard, 30, has played both running back and fullback in an eight-year career spent with the St. Louis Rams, Cincinnati Bengals and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. And he has been used more as a pass-catcher than a pure runner.

Leonard has 993 receiving yards and 828 rushing yards in his career with one receiving touchdown and no rushing TDs. He had 182 rushing yards and 29 catches for 179 yards with the Buccaneers last year.

Not a good sign... IMO is means Robinson and Thomas are going to be out for longer than expected.

I think Baker got hurt as well. Probably just insurance, and I've heard he plays special teams well.

Leonard does play spec teams pretty well...he's a smart pick-up with our RB's hurting and Sunseri going to IR (GRRRR).

Still don't like Ramon Vargas and his twitter, though, after that Sunseri news. Vargas can cram it.

Baker suffered a concussion Sunday, unsure if he'll return this week or not.

me too. he was always the guy in on a play no matter when he was on the field. kinda old school style to him. A whatever you need coach i will do it for the team mentality.

versatile and his contribution do not show up for Monday morning QBs to talk about. but they are there.

good high reward risk move IMO. solid veteran

Good move. Best to pick up a wily vet who can be trusted to pass block and protect the ball.

I love the fact he can play spec teams pretty well...we're gonna need him in punt & kick-off coverage.
