Payton says relationship with DC Ryan "Is Great" Praises his work ethic

Pittsburgh -- New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton angrily denied a report Sunday that his relationship with defensive coordinator Rob Ryan had deteriorated amid a three-game losing streak.

Shortly after the Saints beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 35-32 on Sunday at Heinz Field, Payton offered a lengthy defense of his coordinator and dismissed any suggestion that they were on bad terms.

Payton specifically took aim at a report by Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.

"Jason gets his information from an old defensive coordinator," said Payton, likely referring to Gregg Williams, although he did not use his name.

Williams was the Saints' defensive coordinator before being suspended in the NFL's bounty investigation. He is currently defensive coordinator with the St. Louis Rams.

As for the crux of the report, Payton said it was wrong.

"(Ryan) and I get along. We're doing great," Payton said.

Asked about Ryan's attributes, Payton said he works tirelessly to win.

"Man, I'm telling you what, his toughness and his passion -- he's there 'til when the crickets are gone," Payton said. "It's hard when you're not winning in this league. I love what he's doing. Are there times when we have to look at things? Are there times when I get involved? Absolutely, I'm the head coach.

"But he's doing an outstanding job. You really find out a little bit about everyone when you start losing a few games and you go through a little bit of adversity, because it really hasn't happened around here in a while. Those are the things you appreciate as a head coach. When someone is passionate about teaching, those are the things you appreciate."

Payton has frequently been caught on camera engaged in sideline shouting matches with Ryan, but he said that is just his game-day personality.

"That's me, man," Payton said. "Pick somebody. Pick (special teams coordinator) Greg McMahon. Pick (cornerback) Corey White. Pick (linebackers coach) Joe Vitt. That's just me being fired up. It's more obvious when it's Rob because the camera's going to be on him more than it's going to be on Greg McMahon or a player.

"Yeah, I get upset when there's 12 men on the field. That doesn't mean I'm looking for another defensive coach."

Payton blamed the report -- as well as other stories on Sunday about the Saints' interest in Ray Rice and the future of quarterback Drew Brees -- on "Sunday splash" stories by national reporters.

He said he expects talk of his relationship with Ryan to resurface the next time he is caught yelling on the sideline.

"I'm going to be upset again," Payton said. "You're going to see more clips of it and then Ian (Rapoport) and Adam (Schefter) and you guys can write more reports -- on Sundays though. They won't come out on Thursdays."

Sean Payton punked out the entire press room, and rightfully so. They were all trying to call him out on rumors and \he made them completely look like fools.

Hopefully that was a spark and the team will get their swagger back after this huge win. Im very proud of our team. We could have packed it in, but, they came to play today!!

I see Coach saying this to someone as they are walking away TRYING to convince them of how awesome Ryan is.

Some of you should re-read this out loud. To yourself. In the mirror. Then come back after we play Atlanta.

I'm sure their relationship isn't as bad as the media is trying to make it seem... Everyone gets on edge during the game and arguments happen, it's all squashed afterwords though; and winning always helps :bng:

It does, Mitch. I am telling you though, and I am not saying that SP was blowing smoke, but SP is going to say that no matter what. If he doesn't the season is tanked because the defense completely quits. What he said could be exactly how he feels, but whether he does or does not he is going to say that

Well I ask a question in response: How do the "media" have any idea what their relationship is like?

Seems to me, they're trying to create drama for whatever reason...

The defense really stood up and played for Ryan last night.
Forget they conceded 32pts 16 of them and close to 200 yards was in the final two drives of a game that was won with a defense on prevent mode that never works anywhere in the league.

My only issue is we need to take the turnovers that are on offer, P Rob dropped too many that could prove costly in other games.

Also stop the prevent defense it doesn't work, carry on being aggressive and we won't be any worse off, too many points given away in thr final 2 of each half all year. The offense also needs to be better in the that time making lobg drives and retaining possessions, too many three and outs.
When you watch Seattle at there best if they are up by three in the final 3-4 mins you know they will pound the ball and eat the clock

We "packed it in" with three minutes on the clock.

lets see
you screw and the boss yells at you
you win and all is good for that moment in time

sounds like a standard boss employee relationship to me.

media sensationalism strikes once again.

As much as people will disagree with this, the defense isn't bad because of Rob Ryan. I would say however he should get 35% of the blame though. He's not responsible for poor tackling in the secondary. He's not responsible for poor gap discipline. He's not responsible for poor pursuit angles and he's not responsible for drive extending penalties.

The areas where I think ryan is responsible is the lack of understanding of situational football by our players. Also, the lack of drafting a capable linebacker. Other than that, I just see a lot of bad play by the players. The coaches job is to put you in the position to succeed. The actual execution is on the player.

Get Ryan a proper NT,ILB,OLB and bit of rotation depth and he should be fine. The pass rushers need less snaps to stay fresh and a coverage ilb will solve many issues.

Quite the contrary. The prevent worked really well, taking away all Deep balls and instead giving up chunks underneath thus "forcing" the Steelers to keep moving the ball in shorter steps while having the clock running.

I still hate the prevent defense. Because I have no faith in the team not giving up too many big plays and losing in OT.

Cant say i agree the prevent defense works

Last two drives

13 plays 95 yards 3:20

5 plays 98 yards 1:02

Noticed that too but we must do a better job of getting our defense off the field on 3rd downs. Giving up far too many 3rd and long conversions.
