Peter King: This might be Sean Payton's last season with Saints

Sean Payton is 79-43 as the Saints head coach, bringing the only Super Bowl championship to New Orleans.

But at least one prominent media member is wondering if this season might be Payton's last in The Big Easy.

Sports Illustrated senior writer Peter King touched on Payton and the 5-8 Saints during an interview with Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio.

"That is the single biggest surprise for me, after 14 weeks," King said of the Saints' struggles. "The reason that is such a surprise is because Jimmy Graham is still there, but he's not Jimmy Graham. Drew Brees is still there, but he's not Drew Brees. And the guys on their front seven, Junior Galette, Cam Jordan - these guys are not playing the way they did a year ago.

"You start to wonder - nine years for Sean Payton. Has he run his course in New Orleans? Are they listening to him anymore. Could he start, kind of like his mentor Bill Parcells, to be having kind of a wanderlust, to say hmm, maybe those other jobs out there look a lot better. I just really think the Saints might be one of those teams that are getting old, they are getting cap-strapped, and they are not going to be able to turn it around."

Time will tell. No one knows but him. I hope not though.

Dallas.

That's the only one I could see.

Otherwise he has 100% support from ownership- two generations, he's well paid, he's indoors 10+ games each year.

Players come and go but jobs like this don't.

Yeah...I don't think anyone would disagree with you. He is here until HE chooses to leave.

Man, what a quick turn around. Went from Superbowl contender to just a bunch of chumps real soon. I don't get it. This season has been up and down like never before. However I don't think it will be Sean Payton's last season. Another repeat of this disastrous season and it probably will. I stilll think he has quite a bit of wins left in him.

I hope not, I'm still a big Sean Payton supporter. If he leaves it will be a sad day in my household. but if so, they need a defensive minded head coach.

When I see the word "might" in a sportswriter's column, I immediately know its just bizarre speculation aimed at getting site clicks.
Friggin click suckers!

This season will mark the first time in over 3 years that the Cows will not end up 8-8 (.500). Jason Garrett's job is pretty much safe in Death star nation unless the wheels completely fall off (I don't see that happening this season).

Peter King at his finest lol. What a jackass. With that being said, if the Giants finally parted ways with Tom Coughlin and Eli Manning I could see them going after Payton and letting him groom his own QB.

He'll be back. A lot of players won't. Peter Pan should know better.

I agree with him on 1 issue, we are old in the offense and need to revamp that front line, but our D isn't old,a few pieces here and there we could be good. Payton's not going anywhere!!

Oh, man. That's a great debate on who won't be back in 2015. I've got my list and I'm checking it twice. Sorry, it's getting too close to Christmas. That's right, I said "Christmas". But that's for another forum and debate.

Just don't understand why the hell anyone would even consider working for J.J.

I was kind of thinking we might be seeing signs of burn out on Payton's part. I don't see him wanting to go out like this though. He just doesn't seem like the kind of man that would want to be remembered for leaving a franchise in in a mess. Too much pride. (ego?)

i would be shocked. I could see SP being forced to make changes and put on a shorter leash but fired? Benson is not this stupid. I also can see him having a long talk to the front office about throwing his money around so freely.

shake up a bit sure but gutting?

I hope not either. Payton is not the problems with this team. I hope he decides to fix the things that are problems instead of going where the grass is greener.

Really? He's not going anywhere. Wishful thinking on the part of Peter (I hate the Saints) King.

The only reason he won't be leaving is that Tom Benson is still Super Bowl drunk and having fun. That, and he's senile, but still in charge.

That's media creating the story...

There's nothing more than that fat f**k would want than do a story of Payton taking over the Dallas job...

Just hate, hate how these media vampires drive, create stories...

Yep, this is no time to jump on the H/C merry-go-round ... having some stability at positions like H/C and QB are what brings a team out of it's doldrums.

don't by it for a few reasons, SP built something here and leaving like this would bother him, I think anyway

Re: Peter King: This might be Sean Payton's last season with Saints

I am far more worried about how things between Dennis Lauscha, Loomis, Payton and Rita are going, and what's going to happen when THAT dreaded day eventually comes, than I am worried about Payton leaving the team right now this minute.

Also, people tend to under-estimate the pressure of leaving: if Payton leaves, he has to either (a) retire completely from the game, or (b) go somewhere else and DO IT ALL AGAIN FROM SCRATCH. The pressure on Payton for similar results at his new team will be tremendous and unrelenting. And he won't have the "job security" of a Lombardi on the shelf, at whatever new team he goes to. It is actually much higher personal stakes for him to leave, and really sticking his neck out, putting his reputation on the line, with more uncertainty and doubt, than any scenario of staying here.
