Saints: Haslett returning
by Fanball Staff - Fanball.com Saturday, January 8, 2005 News Saints head coach Jim Haslett will return for a sixth season in 2005. Owner Tom Benson assured Haslett of his job security on Friday. "There's been a lot of speculation about the coach the whole year, and we wanted to get that behind us as quick as possible," general manager Mickey Loomis told the Associated Press. Haslett owns a 42-38 record, but the Saints have not made the playoffs since 2000, the coach's first year. Views Haslett has two years and roughly $6 million remaining on his contract, and previous reports suggested that was the main reason why Benson would retain the coach. Saints' fans can look forward to another rocky, heart-attack-inducing 8-8 season in 2005. |

I am ok with him returning but they have to make some huge changes... from above to below Haslett.
I actually pointed out many many posts ago that he wasn\'t going anywheres. I also think Benson knows its not Haslett the only one to blame for the debacle. [Edited on 9/1/2005 by Euphoria] |

He has 2 years left on his deal, I have no clue why they are trying to get an extension worked out.

Yeah, an extension makes absolutely no sense at this point, but it is Benson\'s MO to do it. Apparently, he thinks it will give the coach a boost of respect or something. Seems like he would have learned from the Ditka situation wherein Benson gave Ditka an extension shortly before the \'99 season and it worked so well that the team went from two 6-10 seasons to a 3-13. I can understand keeping Haslet because of economics but I can\'t understand putting yourself in a worse position without him proving that he deserves an extension.
