$20 Million over the Cap in 2015. What would you do?

The numbers on the left indicates the cap savings (gain) if we release the player after June 1, 2015. The numbers on the right indicates the dead money cap hit (loss) to release the player.

Listed here are players who may be considered for contract reconstruction or possibly cut to save cap room. Something has to be done. What would you do here? If you make a cut, who would replace that player?

Jarhi Evans +$7,500,000 -$3,500,000
Ben Grubs +$6,600,000 -$3,000,000
Marques Colston +$7,000,000 -$3,000,000
Brodrick Bunkley +$4,500,000 -$1,612,000
David Hawthrone +$4,500,000 -$1,510,000
Pierrie Thomas +$2,150,000 -$415,000
Ben Watson +$1,500,000 -$400,000

Here are some players that could consider a contract reconstruction, but most people would be in favor of them not getting cut.

Drew Brews $26,400,000 (Cap Hit for 2015)
Curtis Lofton $9,000,000 (Cap Hit for 2015)

Would you resign any of our key free agents? Mark Ingram, Patrick Robinson?

Are there any players you would consider trading? Jimmy Graham, Jairus Byrd, Kenny Vaccaro?

Re: $20 Million over the Cap in 2015. What would you do?

What would I do? Whatever Loomis would do.

Drew has said he'd restructure. Colston is a class act and the consummate Saint. What he isn't, (anymore) is a $7000000 receiver. A few more new deals and we are cap-compliant, no worries.

Loomis will find every nickel: Meachem and S. Graham weren't on the roster at final cuts, and both came back at a discount. It's just what the guy does

Trade Byrd and Vaccaro; insanity I say!

Restructure (or reduce pay) Brees, Galette, Grubbs, Evans, Lofton, Colston and Bunkley to free up 40 million in cap space.

Thanks for the friendly welcome. I've noticed there is a lot more optimism on this forum versus the one on the saintsreportforum.

Re: $20 Million over the Cap in 2015. What would you do?

This is easy.

Restructure Brees, restructure Galette. BAM! You're right at the cap, and those were moves that Loomis set up well in advance knowing what he would need to do.

Cutting some dead weight in Hawthorne and Bunkley, then reworking Lofton and extending Cam Jordan to a reasonable deal (say 4 years, 32 million) puts you 8 million under the cap.

And those are just the no-brainer moves. The tougher decisions are still to be made, maybe you part ways with Colston, Grubbs, Evans or PT. But we'll have plenty of cap room either way with a minimum of quality players lost. We can easily be $15 million under by the start of free agency.

Re: $20 Million over the Cap in 2015. What would you do?

you save more money cap wise restructuring Colston than cutting him.

Re: $20 Million over the Cap in 2015. What would you do?

I wouldn't mind seeing Ben Grubbs & Jahri Evans cut.

Move Tim Lelito to guard. Sign G Mike Iupati, and C Stefen Wisniewski. Draft a couple interior lineman in the draft for depth & to develop.

Sign Reggie Bush cheap, and mostly as a primary 3rd down back. Draft a RB somewhere in the draft.

Sign Antonio Cormartie. If Vaccaro gets it together and Byrd stays healthy, we'd have a decent secondary.

Draft an OLB with the 13th pick to play opposite of Galette.

Cut Bunkley & Hawthrone

Have some faith in the young blood to step in and fill roles.

Re: $20 Million over the Cap in 2015. What would you do?

Don't want Bush back, injuries are affecting him more than PT. Thomas is cheap can do everything and should be kept.

I wonder how much of Evans and Grubbs struggles are due to Goodwin being both past his best and constantly struggling with injuries rather than there poor play. Get somebody like Collins or Erving who can potentially play at T or G and if the beat out one of the Vets great or they play the swing back up for a year to come in next year

I strongly believe this to be the case. The line played much better with Lelito in there. I think it's worth keeping both Grubbs and Evans and seeing what they can do with a better center. If not, well then either one would be pretty easy to move in a preseason trade. No matter what we still need to get an OL very high in the draft.

Gallete has taken care of himself. He won't be back.

Re: $20 Million over the Cap in 2015. What would you do?

I like the preseason trade if need be for Evans & Grubb.

If Galette is gone. Maybe Edabali can fill his role & add $10+ million to the cap. Draft another OLB opposite.

Sign more players with the added cap space.

Don't think Galette will be gone, that 12ml roster bonus is fully guaranteed

No way we could get rid of Galette, unless his contract is voided somehow

Absolutely tragic. The guy comes from nowhere to be on a contract that exceeds all the lifetime wealth of blackandgold.com's membership.

Re: $20 Million over the Cap in 2015. What would you do?

I just read fully guaranteed! Dang!

I'd rather see a cut with $15 million added to the cap in 2015. That could definitely sign two notable defensive players like an OLB + a CB.

his contract is a piece of cake to redo and should be the first one done ... oh if he is found not guilty and/or league suspension. suspension for bad press not guilt still rubs me the wrong way

It's a roster bonus. It is only "fully guaranteed" if he is on the roster.

Re: $20 Million over the Cap in 2015. What would you do?

Restructure Brees: save 15 mil
Restructure Gallete: save 10 mil

Done your 5 mil under the cap and can still make other moves to get more FA signings... that was easy.

Stop worrying about the CAP.

It's a fully guaranteed roster bonus, which only specifies when it is paid. It being written as a roster bonus just means he gets it paid on March 12 rather than paid as salary over the season.

It's a fully guranteed roster bonus. Now, if it wasn't guaranteed, you would be right and it would be paid only if he is on the roster. But writing the guaranteed money as a roster bonus only changes the way it is paid and accounted for.

Colston's hit is more like 9 million, Grubbs is 8 and Evans is 9 million. They will not be cut. They will not save enough. Colston will probably cut his pay to 4 million a year. Grubbs 6 and Evans 6. That would save them about 10 million. Add Brees fixing that mess of a contract and we will be fine.

hagan714 01-07-2015 06:53 AM

Re: $20 Million over the Cap in 2015. What would you do?

Colston Grubbs and Evens in 2016 are huge cap causality targets and they know it

cut bait before 2016 in savings

Evens around 8 mill
Grubbs around 7 mill
Colston about 7 mill

if i remember correctly.

so redoing their contracts would behoove them all because odds are they will never see that year of the contract. Which they already knew.

that is why i say address OL now in the draft early. you have some serious depth for players with that RT/OG ability. top of the draft we have not seen two in years. shame to miss out on youth with solid low risk high reward players.

you save more redoing those contracts this year than cutting

same goes for Curtis Lofton but his cut bait date 2017. but i am expecting him to redo that contract also.

Then it is not a roster bonus?

A roster bonus is a bonus that a player gets because he's on the roster on a specific date. Every offseason you hear of players who get cut - i.e., they are removed from the roster - before roster bonuses are due because teams don't want to pay roster bonuses.
