As we approach the NFL Draft one question that every Saints fan is asking is, “What Will Payton Do?” (Kudos to anyone who catches the WWJD reference). I think the answer lies not necessarily in the scouting profiles of players in the draft, but in the history of the Saints’ drafts under Sean Payton. There have been some interesting trends to consider going into this year’s draft. The 2014 NFL Draft is considered by many to be the deepest draft in recent memory (arguably a decade) so logically the smart course of action would be to have more draft picks. Coach Payton and Micky Loomis have already traded away Darren Sproles for an additional 5th round pick which brings the total to 7.

There is an overwhelming statistical difference in these two types of draft trades. When the Saints trade during the draft, 75% of the time we trade up. To look at it objectively, one could also say that the Saints have had more success trading down than up, but there are too few of those trades to make a true assessment. Jeff Faine and Roman Harper were both solid starters while here, and Jahri Evans has become a multiple time All-Pro, they still were hit-or-miss on the other portions of trading down. One definite trend that can be see, however, is no matter which direction the Saints move in the draft they consistently do move. Sean Payton has orchestrated at least one trade every year that he has had a draft.

Yeah and thats the problem and why this team is so top heavy. We trade up for players who are typically busts. If we had more depth it would be easier on us for free agency as we would have more pieces to the puzzle to work with. We don't draft or develop enough young players to maintain success. Thats why teams like the ravens or steelers will always have some sort of say in the conversation of who can win it all. They usually have a couple of average years with some really good years. They keep studs and maintain quality depth by drafting really well. Wish we did the same. The more depth we have the easier it is to make moves in the draft. We really need a solid draft in order to be successful this year.

what will he do? leave us all dumb founded and bewildered. does it every year. stupid picks? nah not really so many. no johnny footballs in his history

Like who? Honestly curious as to who you're referring to here. I can only recall Cooks, Ingram, Ellis as trade-up picks and none of them are really "busts."

Title of the article should be the New Orleans Saints Draft Tendencies. Now while Sean Payton is a big part of the process, it's ultimately up the to GM and his team to make the final decision. I think saying well, Sean Payton likes to trade up/down, Sean Payton drafts 55% defense, Sean Payton hasn't been successful doing this or that are fickle assumptions. His job is to coach the team up to a certain standard. He's not the GM, not the director of player personnel, nor is he a scout. The article just seems misdirected.

Ellis was a bust (all i could remember after the SB year was him being driven back 5 yards every play), ingram despite this year is a bust. To me you're a bust if you can't contribute consistently throughout your career where you were drafted. Cooks looks promising though. The other first round picks weren't trade ups but they were indeed busts. Meachem, Robinson were busts. I can only think of a few players who have played consistently and theres only one left on our team, Cam Jordan.

Jenkins was solid at times and was one of the better picks, but could never take it to the next level in NO.
Bush was injury prone, but was a good weapon at times. Too bad he never realized his full potential while playing for the Saints.

so if the players are all on the same page next season not including any players we draft we'll be back to 10-11 wins? Thats what you're saying? Its something that simple?

Um...it says in the article that we draft #27 because we "made the playoffs".
