Saints draft 2015: ESPN analyst Mel Kiper projects Clemson DE Vic Beasley to Saints

1 Attachment(s)
The 2014 season isn't even over yet, but the mock drafts are already rolling out. ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper released his first mock draft of the year on Thursday, projecting Clemson defensive end Vic Beasley to the Saints at No. 13 overall.

While Kiper's mock draft requires ESPN Insider access to view, he noted he saw Beasley as a potential top-15 pick in the 2014 draft, had Beasley chosen to declare for the draft early.

The rest of Kiper's first round mock draft is here.

The 6-foot-2, 235 pound Beasley was named the ACC's Defensive Player of the Year and posted double digit sacks in 2013 and 2014.

Of course, without the impact of the NFL Combine and free agency, these early mocks are as much a guessing game as anything. In Kiper's first mock last year, he projected Tennessee left tackle Antonio Richardson to the Saints with the 27th pick of the first round.

The Saints traded up to select wideout Brandin Cooks, while knee injuries kept Richardson from being drafted.

The Saints could go many ways in the first round. While they may address many of their needs in free agency, they will likely be looking at cornerback and pass rusher as two of their top needs.

We need a pass rusher but he needs to be a NT. We need pressure up the middle.

I can confirm that 10 months or so after the draft i still think Rooks,Fortt and Powell drafted when Richardson wwas on the board was madness

I can only hope! But Rugby Saint is right too... An edge rusher is nothing if the big guys in the middle can't collapse the pocket.

Yep, we have edge rushers, we don't have a push up the middle, although several of our DT's were injured.

Please no. Weak against the run. We were run all over this year (again) and especially our LBs.

It doesn't make sense we would draft him.

If we draft a lb. he needs to be an ILB.

No worries- Kiper is right about 26% of the time

I'd have no qualms if Beasley somehow managed to fall to us. If we feel confident enough that we'll be able to land a quality LB'er in free agency or in the 2nd/3rd round, sign me up. Chris Borland was drafted in the 3rd round last season by the 49ers as was Navorro Bowman the year he came out. Oft injured stud Sean Lee was taken in the 2nd by the Cowboys. We need a ILB... but it doesn't mean we have to take one in the first. I also still believe big John Jenkins is our guy in the middle.

Why would we take a DE when we have glaring needs at CB, OL and LB?

Because Vic Beasley is projected as a 3-4 OLB...

Quote:

Vic Beasley, 3-4OLB, Clemson
Height: 6-3. Weight: 235.
Projected 40 Time: 4.69.
Projected Round (2015): 1-2.

12/13/14: Beasley has 11 sacks, 34 tackles, 21.5 tackles for a loss, two passes batted and three forced fumbles in 2014. He has been very consistent with sacks, recording them in the vast majority of games, including a string of six straight outings. In November, Beasley was banged up with a hand and shoulder injury that held him back. He closed out the regular season versus South Carolina with five tackles, two sacks, another tackle for a loss and a forced fumble. He overwhelmed left tackle Corey Robinson and guard A.J. Cann.

Beasley totaled three tackles, a pass batted and two sacks against Florida State. After a quiet first quarter, he ate up left tackle Cameron Erving. Overall, that tape will help Beasley in his bid to be a first-round pick. He recorded two tackles and one sack against Louisville. A week earlier, Beasley had one tackle, which was a sack, and a forced fumble that he returned 16 yards for a touchdown against N.C. State.

Beasley was underwhelming against Georgia. He had some struggles in run defense versus Georgia and had Todd Gurley break out of his grasp in the backfield on a few plays. Beasley did record a sack with three tackles, two of them being for a loss in that outing. It mainly gave NFL evaluators further evidence that he has to move to outside linebacker and isn't large enough to get any consideration as a defensive end outside of obvious passing situations. However, Beasley is strong for his size, so once he moves to outside linebacker he should be a well-rounded player. Beasley clearly is fast and athletic enough to play linebacker.

8/23/14: Beasley was a tremendous pass-rusher for Clemson in 2013 with 13 sacks. He also picked up 23 tackles for a loss, 41 tackles, six passes batted, four forced fumbles and a fumble recovery for a touchdown. After dominating the early part of 2013, Beasley was clamped down by Florida State as the Seminoles blew out Clemson. To close out the season, Beasley handled South Carolina left tackle Corey Williams with two sacks against the Gamecocks and gave Ohio State a lot of problems in Clemson's bowl win.

Beasley had a breakout 2012 season with eight sacks, but the sophomore was only a situational pass-rusher with 14 total tackles on the year. Beasley must add weight to play defensive end in the NFL.

Personal: Majoring in sociology. His father played at Auburn and is a high school coach.

Plus he's talented enough to play the weakside ILB spot that Hawthorne plays when we use a four man front... So that versatility is a plus.

Agreed! Still, if it took a 1st to get ILB McKinney, I'd be tempted.

26% is actually pretty good considering what a lottery the draft is.
