Projected Compensatory Picks (None for us yet again)

Projecting the Compensatory Draft Picks for 2015 - Over the Cap

This is something else our FO sucks at. We never get these extra picks. Never.

Fantabulous link at the bottom of that article, rationalizing why Troy Aikman is gay :)

Comp picks are granted to teams that lose more than they gain. So, the fact that our FO doesn't suck at replacing players should be a positive. Comp picks are the booby prize.
Would you rather have Golden Tate or a 4th round pick? Branden Albert or a 3rd?
Or this year- Colston, or a 5th or 6th in 2016?

Don't get lost in the trees.

7 of the top 10 positions are held by teams in the playoffs...so they must be doing somethign right to keep the roster stocked with players that make the playoffs/superbowl but yet have more draft picks tossed to them.

But we signed a guy more expensive than both combined.

Not lost at all. I'd just rather follow the mantra of lose a player, sign a player. I'd rather have a vet playing for an entire year instead of a draft pick a year later. And, at best, that draft pick is #97 overall, and that's if you lose a $8 million a year player.
Back to my original question- would you rather have Colston playing for us in 2015, or a 5th round pick in 2016?

I have said before and will say again, the whole system is a mess.
You get the picks by not paying players so they go elsewhere, then you get a pick as compensation, that pick allows you not to pay another player so you get another pick and it goes on and on.

Look at teh 49ers and Ravens, let players leave and get a 3/4 round comp pick, trade your late round pick for a higher/more pick the following year, use the comp pick to get a rookie, then do the same each year.

Comp picks should only be for players retiring, you should not get a pick for not offering FA/existing players market rate deals

Losing $8M in salary and replacing it with an as good/better 3rd -7th draft pick or cheaper FA isn't a bad thing. Using the Colston example wont work as no one is going to pay him what we pay him. He will be a $9.7M cap hit this year. But if someone would I would happily let him go.

Agree the system seems a mess but if we were getting picks out of it I wouldn't have any issue with it.

The best teams in the league use this system. We don't. Even the Panthers seem to be able to use it with the new GM they have. Some teams value draft picks and other teams treat them as wet paper towels and toss them away such as we do.

.

Yep, teams that replace 8 million dollar players with better, cheaper players, or draft choices (minus an entire year) certainly do better massive eye roll

Let's just agree to disagree...no need to get snarky. I don't do that on message boards (anymore) :-)

From my POV very successful teams have figured out a way to churn rosters and reap extra picks. We have not. Nothing more to it than that.

Edit - thanks ScottF...

Also, keep in mind that yes it is minus an entire year but it isn't like there is a gap on the roster. The prized player is gone but in their place is a solid contributor with the added bonus of another pick the following year. So the teams succesfull at this get a 2 for 1 if you will.
