Bill Parcells book: Almost became Saints coach, almost traded them Tony Romo

METAIRIE, La. -- Bill Parcells strongly considered becoming the New Orleans Saints' coach during Sean Payton’s suspension in 2012. And the Saints came closer to trading for quarterback Tony Romo in 2006 than people might have realized.

Those were two of the most interesting Saints-related tidbits in Parcells' latest authorized biography, "Parcells: A Football Life," which he co-authored with writer Nunyo Demasio.

Some of this stuff has been out there already, but I finally had a chance to dig into the book now that the offseason is upon us. And it’s even more relevant now that two of Parcells' protégés are working for the Saints -- Payton and scout Jeff Ireland.

Payton almost took Raiders job: The book detailed how close Payton came to accepting the Oakland Raiders head coaching job in 2004, even buying a black suit and silver tie. But Parcells joined some of Payton’s close friends in the coaching ranks -- Jon Gruden, John Fox and Bill Callahan -- in advising against it.

It doesn't take professional consulting to understand you would likely be working for someone with a haircut styled with a a tupperware bowl. Thanks, but no thanks!!!

Many people wanted him to come here for 2012 just so a guy that's been in the situation before was present with the team and could run it pretty smoothly

He said he didn't want to feel like he was changing Sean Payton's team

Although I would have rather had Parcells than Pete Carmichael for two games, Aaron Kroner for the next two and Joe Vitt for the rest of the season like we ended up having.

"Who knows what Loomis really thought?" Parcells said. "I don’t have any idea. I don’t know Loomis; I only met him once. But guys like me threaten guys like him.":nutkick::awe::rofl:

The bright spot is that we did not get Romo.

Did you also know that Payton has spent some time with the Tuna this off season already? He was looking for advice.

At the time I would have been happy with Romo. Glad it turned out the other way but I think Romo is underrated. I think he would do better in a different franchise.

While we got a better QB with Brees i think Romo would have had much more success under Payton. Romo sitting behind the Saints line from 06-11 would have been interesting.

What about Romo's back problems? That wouldn't have worked out for us. Besides Drew got us to a super bowl victory.

Thank you, I hope he realizes how blind and stubborn he can be at times. I mean this in the sense that people on this forum could tell that Pierre Warren was going to be a baller, and a few other things that I'd have to remember from the middle of the season i've been trying to forget.

Really hope he gives good advice on how to go forward, like maybe draft some linebackers or something.
