Saints dealing with major jump in Drew Brees’ cap number
Wednesday was the third day of the waiver period. For many players, that resulted in significant base salaries becoming fully guaranteed.
In New Orleans, that happened with quarterback Drew Brees, who enters the fourth season of a five-year deal. Via Mike Tripplett of ESPN.com, the quarterback’s base salary of $18.75 million has become fully guaranteed. And his cap number will skyrocket from $18.4 million in 2014 to $26.4 million in 2015. With only one year remaining on his contract (and a cap number for 2016 of $27.4 million), a restructuring makes no sense. The Saints will instead need to extend Brees’ contract if they hope to drive down the cap number for the coming season. Either way, Brees has $38.5 million in cash due over the next two years. Which means that he’ll likely need to have at least $38.5 million fully guaranteed (and paid out over the next two years) as part of any extension. He restructures, no problem.
Is there any doubt at all? |
Re: Saints dealing with major jump in Drew Brees’ cap number
Mike Florio finally found something to write about.
That's top-notch journalism out there. lol |
Re: Saints dealing with major jump in Drew Brees’ cap number
He'll restructure. His window is closing every year. He knows that and wants another Lombardi or two before retiring a Saint.

Re: Saints dealing with major jump in Drew Brees’ cap number
What's funny is we know what is right for our team. Most importantly, so does Drew and he will make the proper adjustments to steer us in the right direction.
What's even funnier are the opposing douche bag haters and wanna - trying to be "salary cap guru's" who think they got it all figured out. Yall know this old hand, Saints are screwed salary cap wise. Here it comes this year to bite them in the ass. They need to trade Drew, yada yada yada. Listen up haters, doubters, skeptics & douchebags. Yall don't know sh!t and never will. I trust our ownership and leaders of this team. Mostly this is directed towards you Failclowns. While you build your stadium/dome looking like a butthole with piped in fake ass fan noise, we will continue to grow and admire our Lombardi Trophy. That is all ") |

You know he will.

Re: Saints dealing with major jump in Drew Brees’ cap number
I love how people who know nothing about cap strategy gripe about other people who know nothing about cap strategy. Let's all admit that we don't know exactly what's going on, because no one tells us the truth.
I only know this for sure. We have pushed back salaries for years, and the ugliness of last year doesn't make these guys look like geniuses. I reserve my judgement for now, but I am not real confident in this bunch, currently. |

I trust Loomis' decisions
He said this years cap situation is better than last years and we managed to sign Jimmy Graham and Jairus Byrd last offseason |
Re: Saints dealing with major jump in Drew Brees’ cap number
I'd be more concerned if we had mad cap room. Why don't they ever do stories on that topic and the losers who have it.

Re: Saints dealing with major jump in Drew Brees’ cap number
I have no doubt Drew will be willing to extend the deal. I am sure he will. But the issue is that a simple renegotiation isn't feasible because there aren't any future years to push money back. So, what will happen is they will work a new deal and move current money to signing bonus. I'm guessing they add three years to deal. The issue will be Drew and the Saints deciding what the base salaries will be in those years and how much of it is guaranteed. My guess is Drew will seek something averaging 20-22 million over those years- the Saints will likely want that more in the 15-18 range.

Re: Saints dealing with major jump in Drew Brees’ cap number
Give him 30mil signing bonus. That was Brady's "paycut" lol
|
Re: Saints dealing with major jump in Drew Brees’ cap number
He's due 38 million over the next two years, so that's the starting point on any guaranteed money for him. And he's probably going to want at least 20 million on any new years. So adding 3 years at 20 a piece, means an extension would have to be 5/98 with more than 38 million guaranteed. Either way, the Saints will be pushing money into future years.
Probably will be fine as long as Brees continues to play at a high level. |
Re: Saints dealing with major jump in Drew Brees’ cap number
Great guy. Great QB. But, he's not going to be giving the Saints a discount.

Why can't Benson give him Rita's cut of the team and call it even?
Two birds... ;) |
Re: Saints dealing with major jump in Drew Brees’ cap number
If we don't pay Drew very much money he may have to do even more commercials to make ends meat.
