Loading up in free agency is often a perilous endeavor for NFL teams
1 Attachment(s)
It’s already being touted as the best free agent class in history before any players become eligible to negotiate with other teams.
The hype has created clamoring. The cries to load up or go after this target or that target have already begun in force. Many teams will heed those cries and make a splash. Money will be thrown around. Someone will be declared the winner of free agency. The excitement is understandable. It’s fun to dream about Dez Bryant catching passes on the outside or Ndamukong Suh providing pushing the pocket and wreaking havoc for your favorite team instead of inflicting it, but those visions typically do not materialize as hoped. There are, of course, free agent success stories. The Saints made the right decision in signing Drew Brees, and cornerback Keenan Lewis has been a bargain. But by and large, the teams that try to win championships in March end up regretting their decisions by January. History does not lie. Its a great year if you dont have money. With so many team making splashes and paying big there should be some great bargains

Re: Loading up in free agency is often a perilous endeavor for NFL teams
There are a lot less holes on the O than on the D. I wish we would commit to a 3-4 and get players that fit, even if we commit to a 4-3 do the same but commit to 1 or the other because these mix of 3-4,4-3 players don't seem to mix well together and it shows, no stability at all in our D. It is truely like other posters say at times, square pegs in round holes ,it's pathetic!!

Key FA's in key positions (QB, OL, NT, LB, S, CB)
Fill the rest with intelligent, athletic role players. |
Re: Loading up in free agency is often a perilous endeavor for NFL teams
We wont be signing a FA.
McCown and Griffin both contracted for next year. Id love to see another Guard brought in but with the dead money i doubt Grubbs or Evans go anywhere. Draft a good G/T like Collins who can play both before taking over at either RT or G fulltime in 2016 when we can cut players on high contracts. Id love the Raiders C but i think he will be out of our reach as others will offer big salary. In FA a NT/CB2 and ILB are highest on my list |
Re: Loading up in free agency is often a perilous endeavor for NFL teams
In FA, OLB position is loaded with talent. ILB not so much. I rather draft ILB.

Re: Loading up in free agency is often a perilous endeavor for NFL teams
O-line is my first priority even with this gawd awful defense. We need a CB in FA and possibly a LB'er. If we can do this and draft a quality NT I think we'll be looking good again.

Nothing wrong with mid-tier free agents to fill holes. They aren't that expensive.
Lewis, Greer, Lofton, , Sharper, Shanle, Fujita, Collins, Haralson, Heath Evans, Goodwin were prime examples of free agents that didn't break the bank and fill a role nicely. Some even played top notch. However, Byrd, Grubbs, Hawthorne, Bunkley, and Lorig are examples of guys I think we paid too much for. |
Re: Loading up in free agency is often a perilous endeavor for NFL teams
I think Byrd will be fine in the long run. We may have overoaid but pair him with a true SS and get a pass rush going and he will be fine
