Saints Can Clear $20M In Cap Space

More than enough to bring a few key FAs. How the New Orleans Saints can quickly trim more than $20 million - ESPN Quote:

Re: Saints Can Clear $20M In Cap Space
Plus another, what, $9M by cutting Hawthorne and Bunkley after June 1?
|
Re: Saints Can Clear $20M In Cap Space
Would Brees restructuring this year save us some more as well?

Re: Saints Can Clear $20M In Cap Space
Checklist:
Figure out Ingram's market value. Other teams will bid, hopefully we can match. If not there's plenty of RBs in the draft. Fix the O line. Need a Guard, need a Center. Fix the D line. Need a run-stuffer and depth. Fix the LBs. Need youth and athleticism. Inside and outside. Fix the secondary. Need a true #2 CB. NOW. We could go into training camp with some very interesting pieces. Give Brees another 2 seconds. Limit the run. Limit the deep plays. Tackle well. Create a few more turnovers. I'm digging 2015 already.... |

Hawthorne for one more year ONLY if we draft a stud LB. Any key veteran FA signings would make these two obsolete IMO. |

Read all the headlines you want.
The Saints are in a good position. Better than advertised. We will sign 2-3 key free agents AND draft well this year. |
Re: Saints Can Clear $20M In Cap Space
When it comes to cap relief,Over the Cap shows that 2016 will be a good year for us. It's like that year is a release valve for all the backloaded contracts.I wonder if Loomis purposely planned it that way?

Re: Saints Can Clear $20M In Cap Space
Everyone thought the same thing last year. Don't you guys remember the falcon fan forums going crazy when we signed the number 1 FA out there.
This year we might land 2 big time FAs along with some solid role players. |

Aside from 2012 (no head coach) and 2014 (no clue), this team has made the playoffs 5 of 7 years. 2010 - Lost wild card by 5 points (away) 2011 - Lost divisional by 4 points (away) 2012 - No HC 2013 - Lost divisional by 8 points (away) 2014 was a kick in the nuts to a coach who had admittedly become somewhat complacent. People were fired. Reinforcements were hired. Is there anyone you fear more than a rejuvenated Sean Payton? |

I've been calling for several things over the years:
Speedy edge rusher Sideline to sideline LB O line help |
Re: Saints Can Clear $20M In Cap Space
I put a post on a thread a few weeks back. This is not the year to pay any money on a RB. Including 5/6 top picks in the draft there are around 20 above average/good RBs on the market.
|
Re: Saints Can Clear $20M In Cap Space
Yeah, but we can no longer afford to miss on our high picks, especially at running back...
There's enough affordable talent at RB in free agency that would be more than effective in this offense with the offensive line reinforced... |
Re: Saints Can Clear $20M In Cap Space
Galette: Due a $12.5 million roster bonus. By converting to signing bonus, it will save $10 million against the 2015 cap by spreading it out over five years.
Byrd: Due a $6 million roster bonus. By converting to signing bonus, it will save $4.8 million against the 2015 cap by spreading it out over five years. Graham: Due a $5 million roster bonus. By converting to signing bonus, it will save $3.33 million against the 2015 cap by spreading it out over three years. Lofton: Due a $4.5 million roster bonus. By converting to signing bonus, it will save $2.25 million against the 2015 cap by spreading it out over two years. Total savings: $20.38 million That leaves another $6 million-plus the Saints must trim by March 10 by either releasing players, working out pay cuts or restructuring current deals. They have plenty of options Simple redos for sure. Colston restructure Evans restructrue Grubbs restructure? hard call next year his dead money is next to nothing. i say draft and stick it out one more year unless training camp proves we upgraded in the draft. and/or Brees does not restructure up on the trading block he goes. jets? cleveland? Sign Brian Hoyer and stock pile the picks for 2016 and go after Connor Cook |

A week and a half to go... Hopefully we start hearing some news soon. Knowing Loomis though we'll hear nothing until the morning of March 10th.
