If we miss the playoffs this year is Payton on the hot seat?

What do you think? I think you have to say so. Im not saying fire him after next season, but all eyes will be on him. Just a question to pass the time in this brutal offseason.

Yes definitely if he isnt fired. Too much opportunities squandered.

I don't think Payton is gonna be here a whole lot longer anyways... His job won't be in jeopardy because I think it's understood that as Drew's career winds down so will Payton's tenure here.

Yes.

And Brees.

Re: If we miss the playoffs this year is Payton on the hot seat?

depends.

saints offense still one of the nfl most productive? answer yes and i have to say the seat is warm but not hot

Saints defense remains a hug whole? then i see a shake up coaching wide and SP buddies are on the hot seat.

Re: If we miss the playoffs this year is Payton on the hot seat?

I'd have to say yes. I know SP has been the best coach we've ever had, but his stubbornness is killing this team. Hanging on to ineffective coaches year after year. Repeated drafting blunders as well as losses of good players like Ninkovich, Nicks and others have put this team in serious jeopardy. Now after YEARS of completely ridiculous play from Patrick Robinson we're negotiating with this guy?? Inconceivable to say the least. The inability to hire a scouting staff that can pick obviously better talent than what we've done? All of this is a recipe for disaster which is what this team was last year. Not going after Vic Fangio and his counterpart was just plain stupid. They have produced better defenses than ours forever and we keep Ryan. Granted, I like Ryan but one year wonders like Gregg Williams and Ryan are a dime a dozen. To me, this team isn't trying to get to another championship. It's so obvious. Maybe it's due to the Benson squabble and they don't want a winning team if things don't go Benson's way. Your guess is as good as mine, but it is mindboggling some of the things this coaching staff and scouting dept. have done and are still doing.

It would take a complete meltdown before Payton is fired, but I do believe Payton walks within a couple of years. During the 2014 season, to me he looked like stress and burnout was setting in.

Re: If we miss the playoffs this year is Payton on the hot seat?

Most coaches have a short life with most teams anyway. Payton has made mistakes along the way but has also seen the wonderland with him here. I would believe if we fall short of making the playoffs he's done in N.O. He is and has been good here. If he does go and Brees still has 1 year left on his contract with his age I would trade Brees for picks and start to rebuild. Personally at Brees age I would trade him after this season anyway win or lose.

I don't think so. We have it pretty good even with last years debacle of a season.

After decades of horrible teams and terrible coaches, we have a good coach who has had two losing seasons since he got here and a Superbowl victory. I don't get why anyone would want him to leave.

Re: If we miss the playoffs this year is Payton on the hot seat?

Agree with jnormand, I think back to all that have passed through our doors besides with Mora there has been very few competitive seasons. I do agree with the burnout issue a lot of Coach's don't like moss growing on their backs and move on. I do think if Brees leaves, SP won't be far behind. Can't imagine all the family power struggles and in-fighting are making it a fun place to work either.

Re: If we miss the playoffs this year is Payton on the hot seat?

I'd imagine that the question of whether Payton stays or not, probably hinges quite a bit on who eventually winds up winning the Benson family squabble. If it's Rita, I kinda don't see him staying around for a very long term future. She'll clash with him and fire him pretty quick. That's a hot seat that's totally separate from winning or losing.

Remember the stipulation in Payton's contract, about him being able to walk if Loomis was suspended, gets fired or leaves, the provision that got voided by the NFL? That wasn't in there just about Loomis and Payton being buddies, personally -- it was about preventing instability or hot-headed ownership from ruining the organization.

No I don't think so.
However, if the Saints repeat last years performance, it may be time to shop Brees while he would still benefit the team with a trade, but I hope not.

Re: If we miss the playoffs this year is Payton on the hot seat?

I think if we don't make the playoffs this year it is because Payton has lost his fire. I see a big difference in his demeanor since the year off. He didn't look as fiery as he used to. And last year he looked like things were just getting away from him. Not sure if he has the will to keep fighting to overcome the decline of this team. I am not sure if he really wants this anymore and this year will tell me whether that is true or not. If we continue to decline this year I can't see him wanting to be around.

If we go 9-7 or 10-6 and miss the playoffs I would say not likely. We go 8-8 or 7-9/6-10 and I say yes. The D won't be #4, but it should be middle of the pack which is good enough for our offense. If Vaccarro and PRob actually played like 1st round picks last season we would have been in the playoffs. Those early season losses were on the D at the end of the games...we win those and it would have been different. It's easy for young players to be pumped when the team is winning. It's also easy for them to give up when they are losing. That's why the veteran leadership needs to be there.

Absolutely not. Unless this team just implodes. His jobs is safe for 5-10 years.

Sean does learns from mistakes and watching what goes on around the NFL. I think he is smart enough to rebound and know when to cut bait when something isn't working to something that will.

I am more curious as to when he is going to pull the plug on Bree's that will tell me a lot about him.

Then why are the 3 stooges still around (Vitt, Johnson, McMahon) if Sean is so smart at cutting dead weight

He ended 40+ years of hell. He's my coach for a very
long time.

Re: If we miss the playoffs this year is Payton on the hot seat?

He was recently signed to a rich extension. He's got a few years no matter how poorly he might do...........the thing is he's going to bounce back and get this team back in the fight and coaching will be fun again. He's lost his initial core group of coaches and players and has watch them dwindle every year. If he restocks the shelves properly at the draft and we sign a couple of impact players we are ready for another run at the Lombardi.

His contract runs out the end of the 2017 deal so after this year we only have 2 years left. I personally think he goes at the end of the deal as does Drew

Re: If we miss the playoffs this year is Payton on the hot seat?

I didn't get to watch every game this year due to work
However the games that I did watch 1 or 2 plays different would have been a win vs a loss.
We could have made the playoffs and we wouldn't be having this discussion now.
No I don't think he's in the hot seat.

Re: If we miss the playoffs this year is Payton on the hot seat?

Also to comment on the "he leaves when Drew leaves" I'm not sure about that either.
Are you thinking he only stays because we have a top 5 QB at the helm? So if he does leave where exactly will he coach that has a star QB in place thats also looking for a HC?
I just don't see that panning out either

The team is not one player nor the staff one coach.

That being said, You're only as good as the people with whom you chose to surround yourself. If you're incapable or unwilling to select and keep quality people, I just can't tell you how fast I'd like to see you go.

As long as his drinking buddies are around, its going to be hard to take anything he does seriously now

Re: If we miss the playoffs this year is Payton on the hot seat?

Good thread. You all are forgetting something very important.
Who says SP will want to stay?
Things change after a while. Loomis being there does not really matter for SP. No worry in RB running the team because the the owner is , will be GB. That is a fact!!!
Perhaps SP will want to leave after 2015 season. New team. New city. New players. New challenges and new money. New wife ...perhaps SkylenneM. New kids.
After 2015 season , if the Saints are not better than 8-8 , I think SP may want out.
The Saints' division is really still weak. I do not see AF, TB doing spectacular for 2015. 2016? Maybe?
AF and TB would have to get some major draftees and good luck. They are in the same situation as the Saints. Rebuilding up.
It takes time.

I totally understand about SP being the best coach Saints have had over all. Nothing stays the same.
