The New Orleans Saints will eventually wipe a total of $27 million off the books by trading Jimmy Graham to the Seattle Seahawks. That’s how much Graham had left on the four-year, $40 million contract he signed last year.

But for salary-cap purposes, the Saints will save only $2 million in 2015, with the other $25 million being saved in 2016-17.

That’s because the Saints paid Graham a $12 million signing bonus last year, which was scheduled to be divided equally over four years on the salary cap. They had $3 million count against their cap last year. The remaining $9 million will now count against the cap this year. Then Graham will be completely off the books after that.

In the end, Graham’s historic contract (the richest in NFL history for a tight end) wound up being a one-year, $13 million deal for New Orleans -- and a three-year, $27 million deal for Seattle.

The trade doesn’t give the Saints immediate cap relief -- in fact, their cap number actually went up since they added center Max Unger, whose $4.5 million salary in 2015 all counts against the cap.

However, the Saints can still use the future cap space they saved to their advantage by signing new players to deals with back-loaded salary-cap costs (like what they’ve been doing with most of their big deals in recent years).

Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said Tuesday night the Saints will use the resources they acquired in the deal to help fix their defense.

...and this is really the bigger picture.
Next year and then the next year: $25 million.
The way Payton/Brees spreads the ball, that's way too much money for the TE piece,
especially when when we are bleeding profusely on the other side of the ball.
We have to field 54 and have at least 8 spots on both sides of the ball be SOLID.
The Graham money goes a long way to making that happen.
There are others also holding their breath.:(

NFL network - The saints are a franchise without a plan and this was a desperate effort to clean up their mistakes.

Obviously they know absolutely nothing about the team and how Graham would disappear in the most critical moments!

I thought it was an excellent trade, two first round picks is music to my ears.

I look away from the ball a LOT.
When Graham wasn't the primary option, he would almost mail it in.
Would not sell it, or keep his man away from the after catch.
Almost loafing...but you didn't hear that from me.
Hurt or not hurt, good effort sets up the next play.
If your hurt, go sit down somewhere.
If you are option 2, 3 or 4, with Brees you might still get the ball.
Loomis and Payton have a plan, they always do.
I am patiently anticipating the unveiling of what's next.

Jamie Dukes had me laughing my *** off yesterday trying to talk down the Saints. He said 33 million was to much for the interior line and then both Evans and Robertson said "Brees steps up in the pocket and now he can go back to doing that". Dukes had this stupid look on his face, it was priceless. Actually I heard a lot of garbage spewed about the Saints/Graham yesterday

JG had his moments where he looked like the best TE to ever play the game, and then he had moments where he looked like a kid lost in a sea of men.

Can't disappear when you are a primary cog and getting paid all that coin - have to produce almost every game.


I wish the guy well - but I suspect he'll have a good year or two (like all these guys do after we trade them) and then start falling off due to injuries and age...
