Can Josh Hill Effectively Fill the Saints' Tight End Void?

"When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us."

--Alexander Graham Bell

At the opening bell of the 2015 NFL free agency period this past Tuesday, the New Orleans Saints shocked the football community by sending away their star wide receiver tight end Jimmy Graham and his 950 yards and 12 touchdowns per-season averages to the Seattle Seahawks. Moving such a major component of the Saints offense cross-country has left a large majority of analysts viewing this move in the context of the immense losses it presents to the Saints, and the incredible fortunes gained by the Seahawks.

But what many have failed to recognize is the rare opportunity this trade has created for someone on the Saints roster to now claim those 77 receptions and 119 targets per season being vacated by the All-Pro tight end.

And it's this exact oversight that will allow many forward-looking fantasy football owners to get a steal at the tight end position in Saints third-year tight end Josh Hill this upcoming season.

I already have him in two leagues from last year and hust traded Rivers/4th rounder for Hill and a 3rd.

Effective by what standard? That he can do HIS job in a "spread the ball around" offense?

He's already proven valuable in the run and passing game. Having #9 only elevates his status.

So yes, he can fill the void.

Josh Hill will be fine and the homers that pick up Hill in their fantasy leagues will be richly rewarded...

Every article keeps saying can Josh Hill be Jimmy Grahams replacement or words to that effect.

We don't need him to be Jimmy, our offense became to reliant on the supposed "monster mismatches" that Graham presented.

If we give Drew a good running game and the opportunity to spread the ball about, then Josh Hill will be a key contributor for us.

shouldn't be tough, especially since Hill actually is a tight end ;)

Yes he can. We just don't need any more dropped passes. Drew will get the ball to them if they can get open and catch the ball.

Josh Hill has some big plays and tds because teams were double teaming Graham and others and lost him in the coverage

Less opportunity for that this year

Guy is young, can block, is cheap, good sport

Re: Can Josh Hill Effectively Fill the Saints' Tight End Void?

it is very possible. Drew will throw him open. all he will need to do is go after it and catch it. plus take the beating jimmy did. he will get hung out to dry in every game. tall WR/TE with so so speed always do.

plus jimmy's route tree was never really that complex so that helps.

can he catch the drew brees patented back shoulder throw regularly is the big question

With Spiller and Cooks, Hill will still get lost in coverage.

I watched the interview with Payton

As soon as the media brought up Josh Hill, Payton gave the widest smile I've ever seen him make

He looks genuinely excited about how good Hill could be for us.

8. Back to Payton: In the wake of trading away Jimmy Graham, the Saints coach raved about Josh Hill, repeatedly saying that he "loves" the third-year tight end. The coach also praised a pair of practice squad wideouts -- presumably Brandon Coleman and Jalen Saunders -- as emerging players.

9. Payton also called the trade for former Seahawks center Max Unger a move that was "absolutely" made to help keep Brees upright on passing downs.
