Sean Payton: We need to draft defenders who play right away
 

The Saints own a pair of first-round picks after trading tight end Jimmy Graham to the Seahawks and they have five picks overall in the first three rounds, which puts them in position to add some talent to the roster after a 7-9 season.

During an interview with WWL on Wednesday, coach Sean Payton gave some hints about what kind of talent the team was hoping to acquire. It probably comes as no surprise to anyone who watched the Saints in 2014 that Payton thinks the team needs immediate help on the defensive side of the ball.

“It’s going to be important for us defensively in this draft to bring in some guys that we feel like can help us play right away,” Payton said, via the New Orleans Times-Picayune. “And I think if you’re looking closely to when we’ve been real good, there’s been that element defensively, there’s been that element in the running game.”

Either this is a smoke screen by Payton or we plan to draft Collins, Scherff, Shelton or Beasley (trade up scenario) right away.

Well,with Seans comment, Im assuming we're going offense in the first...or unless he wants other teams to think that and we go defense....or unless he knows other teams will know his mind games and assume we go defense,but in actuality we go offense. Who knows?

Oh come on anyone we draft at 13 is going to start... they have to have you seen our D play? Anyone can end up making that unit as a starter.

If Williams is there at #4 we better trade with OAK to grab him. Give our 13 and 31 up for the hands down best player in the draft.

Then at 44 we could take the best ILB available.

i'd even be fine with just staying at 13,31 and taking BPA on defense with both picks even though I'd rather OLine at 13

What I'm taking from his comments is that we won't be reaching for players who may or may not contribute immediately like last years second round pick. I believe that Payton is trying to calm the fans down before the draft believing that he'll try to play it a little safer and look for starters not projects.

This does not mean we will trade up.....it means we will look for value and not potential. With two first round picks we have a good chance of finding starters. Personally, I hope we keep all five of our first picks where there is a lot of talent available in the first three rounds. Then package any number of the picks left for trading up to get a player they want. :bng:

I would like to see every draft pick this season. We do need a few starters to make thing solid, I have given up on any 1 player taking over a game but get 3-4 in their on the same page you get results on a consistant basis. NT, ILB, G need to be able to start with our draft picks and then get solid rotational players to fill in.

I would LOVE to see those two guys in black and gold. Could you imagine if somehow Perryman fell to our pick in the second and we picked him?? I'd have to go change my underwear and not because I crapped them....

Coach Payton et al coaches really have to build trust in the players, their abilities, their discipline and their execution...

More so the offense as opposed to the defense, is like a carefully orchestrated ballet, everything is timing and place so that the quarterback has an optimum vantage point, a clear presentation of options from which to read and select and throw...

Blockers have to arrive at certain points to offer max protection while skill players move and arrive on their assignments while not tipping their hand to defenders...

I can see why a receiver in this offense may take a year to see the field if he comes from a very basic college offense...

Guys like Cooks, and possibly Dorsett, arrive with amazing skill sets with experience in more advanced offenses and bring rare character traits that allow them to excel out of the gate...

Perhaps Coleman and Jones just need more time (and reps) in a pro-set offense to blossom and maximize their potential...

Defenders basically have to earn trust by staying disciplined within their assigned duties on plays, trusting the coached, called defense and not going off extemporaneously on their own judgment, possibly exposing the entire defense to a big play or score...

But a younger, stronger, faster defender who understands self-discipline and team discipline is what we should be drafting with the early picks to have the greatest impact for THIS season...
