Gator -- You\'re starting to think like me now...lol I do wonder why McCarthy wanted out. If he felt like the Saints could contend next year, then it makes no sense why he wanted out. Maybe he thought the offense had too many problems and it would be more of the same? It\'s never a good sign when your offensive coordinator quits. It doesn\'t make me feel good!!! And it also makes me more sceptical about the whole Saints organization. Haslett included. And then maybe he thought Brooks can\'t get it done. Who knows? I just really have my doubts about this team and its chances of winning next year. The upcoming free-agency period is going to tell me a lot about their desire to win. If we go the cheap route again in FA, then I don\'t like our chances. No matter what else happens. Then again, I am a sunshine boy...LMAO. I\'ll be preaching super bowl before the season starts, I\'m sure...LMAO!! |

I don\'t know the number, but I did read that SF offered him a LOT more money. Might that have something to do with it too fellas?

You\'ve left me here alone to fend for myself. I\'ve stood my ground against the \"fire \'em all\" crowd.. ;) But, yes, I think money played a role in McCarthy\'s decision to go to San Fran. But, I\'m really wondering if there wasn\'t more to it than that? |

You\'ve been doing fine. Keepin\' it civil. Most everyone has been, thankfully.

even more implicating is that i read in some article is that he declined a contract extension when haslett upped. i just hope he loves leon enough to try and get him out west. LOL shades of bobby hebert, i am ready for a average offense (rattay at the helm anyone?) with a shutdown defense again.

Gator --
If we keep having to call timeouts because the play isn\'t getting called quickly enough, then I\'ll be inclined to agree that it has to be on Brooks. It be hard for me to believe that we got another offensive coordinator who\'s offensive play calling was too complicated. So, yes, we have a deal.. It\'s going to be interesting to see how the 49\'ers offense does. |

Before we put it all on Mike wanting to leave, just remember, they may have agreed to handle it this way. There is a chance Haz wanted to go another direction, he and Mike talked it over and Mike entertained the other offers that came his way knowing that he was done here.
Oftentimes people are let go and things are put out in the public to make it harmonious. That\'s called PR. I don\'t think you can make too much of the company line on this one. Also, there is money and people are motivated by that. SF hasn\'t exactly made the best decisions in recent years. If their offense outdoes ours (with whoever the OC is) I hereby promise to do something unpleasant to myself. I may even drink a 6 pack of beer I don\'t like. |

It clearly states that McCarthy turned down a 2 year contract extention. That doesn\'t sound like Haz and company wanted McCarthy gone to me. I think ALL evidence points to McCarthy wanting out. And, like Gator, I have to wonder why? I don\'t think it was all about money. Although I think money always plays a part. |
It was McCarthy who wanted out!
Yeah...I\'m not saying that he didn\'t want out, just that Haz seems to like the guy and didn\'t want to sell him out publicly if they did force his hand.
He may not like Haz, may not like the city, may not like the state of the franchise, the defense, his weirdo QB that he brought here.... My point was just that we\'ll never know his motivation. It will be very interesting to watch this offense in 05 I don\'t want our QB coach promoted, I want someone outside to come in and try to straighten things out. Only then will we know how much of the blame is on Mike and how much is on our guys not trying. |

Just because Haslet offered him an extension last year does not mean that things that went on this season didn\'t cause Haslet to change his mind about the guy. Maybe Has finally realized that McCarthy was part of the problem and rather than dissing him, just let him leave. That\'s a pretty decent act.

There\'s absolutely no way to argue that money wasn\'t a big factor here... BUT... why would a guy leave this offense and these weapons to go to a team with very little prospect of success in the next few years?
Maybe SF was the final destination b/c of money, but it seems that the decision to leave, no matter where he landed, was made earlier. Does that suggest he didn\'t believe in the team, Haslett, Brooks, the org, the other coaches and players? Dunno, but such an implication isn\'t that far reaching. Likewise - simply b/c he didn\'t burn bridges when he left (in the media no less) does not mean that he actually chose to leave. I just left a job and I left cordially, but there was a mutual understanding that we both pretty much f---ing hated each other. Point is: if your initial instinct told you he was getting pushed out, I wouldn\'t abandon that feeling simply b/c he said \"it was just time to go\" in the press. I would bet this was mutual. I think McCarthy probably felt lucky that Haslett took the brunt of the Brooks backlash - a good amount of which he probably deserved - he doubted the team\'s ability to succeed, and may not have wanted to be associated with what he believes to ulitimately be a losing org. Likewise, I think the team and especially Haslett and the FO probably believed that the team had the elements necessary to be a top 10 or even top 5 offense. There seemed to be frustration and disappointment with the offense since the 7-2 start of the 2002 season. Moreover, the team needed a scapegoat - they couldn\'t possibly sit through this offseason without making changes at major coaching positions. Venturi is Benson\'s buddy. If Haslett wasn\'t going, McCarthy was the odd man out. Overall, I think both wanted out, and both got what they wanted. Now let\'s see if the team ends up better off... or worse. |
