Breaking down what Max Unger means for the New Orleans Saints

Unger is an experienced, productive starting offensive center who will not be 30 years old until next April and is under contract until 2017. He immediately solidifies the center position (occupied in 2014 by Jonathan Goodwin and, sparingly, Tim Lelito) so long as he is here. A knock against Unger has been his durability, and that is a fair concern. He has started 35 regular-season games in the last three years of a possible 48. However, consider that Graham has only started 34 of 48 over the same time span. So the Saints are not really losing or gaining anything towards the injury report.

To find out just what the Saints are getting in Unger, I compared his 2014 snap count with departing Saints center Jonathan Goodwin to find common opponents. The only team they both faced last season was the Carolina Panthers. Unger immediately showed off his skills as the second-best center in the NFC behind the prolific Dallas Cowboy, Travis Frederick

If it means a clean pocket for 2 more seconds, it's worth every bit of the trade.

Great article. Bree's may have some time to throw and Ingram somr room to run.

The apex of winning for us is protecting Brees. We had to deal with it, it was becoming a big problem. Jimmy's services could not reconcile it because some games, he could have been serving beer and hotdogs and doing more good for the team. Seahawks will come to know this as we did.

And perhaps Ingram won't be met by 3 defenders 2 yards behind the LOS.

OL > TE

It's not like Ingram has never had a good hole to hit or he went down on the first hit...

But if the line could gel quickly as we'll have at least two (2) new starters...

And Unger is known as a bit of a mauler for a center...

The running backs should have a nice table set when they hit the line of scrimmage...

Then it's right to say that for the past couple seasons Ingrams been eating with his hands a lot.

And if so there's gonna be a lot of crow-eatin' 'round here. A lot.

Quickly... This only holds true if he stays healthy<<<<<<< He missed a significant amount of time last year and that can't be pushed under the rug....

Missed 3 games in '13. I believe 2 were with a concussion. Not sweating that one.

Missed most of 2014 with a leg injury. Typical for an interior lineman. But IIRC, he came back and started the entire playoffs and Superbowl.

Seems ready to go.

Are we really any worse off at Center if he misses a few games?

No worse than a TE who suddenly forgot how to catch footballs

I just wish we had drafted another stud guard.I won't even mention the C word. (Not center)

Okay, I'll say it. I wish we had signed Collins,

Well... Our former backup center is now our starting left guard and we don't really know who the new backup center is. I guess Lelito would slide back to center and Kelemete would start at left guard in that scenario. I'm not worried about Lelito playing center but that left guard spot could cause us some headaches if Unger went down.

I wished we had signed Collins as well. I haven't read much about the Cowboys' pursuit, just that they actually pursued him...

He could have the worst injury of his career and probably still out play what we saw at the center position last year.

we traded for an OC that is in the top 3 of any discussion around the league as to who the best center in the NFL is.

i am not worried about this position. back up is set and i am ready for the drop off he comes off the field. LOG is my number one concern

The locals up here are still buzzing about that pick and subsequent signing.
I wish him well though.

Especially if he didn't have anything to do with what happened. Its just a sad story all the way around. If he is completely innocent I hope he has a great career.

The Unger trade was flat out stealing. If the Saints solve the problem at Left Guard then Drew will have time to move up in the pocket and find that 3,4 option like he used to when he had time to survey the field. Graham made it to where the defense knew where the ball was going, hope this allows the whole field to open up again

Just got through watching all of the vids on the Saints' site. They feel really good about Kelemente and Lelito. Maybe probably why they did not pursue Collins as hard as Dallas.

Re: Breaking down what Max Unger means for the New Orleans Saints

I think most of the NFL writers tend to forget that the Saints value guard and center more than tackle on the offensive line. I have no problem with Lelito at left guard
