Delvin Breaux catching notice in Saints practices
 

The Saints picked two cornerbacks in this year’s draft as part of an overhaul to the group that started when they signed Brandon Browner as a free agent, but P.J. Williams and Damian Swann aren’t the only players on the coaching staff’s radar in their first NFL offseason.

There’s also Delvin Breaux, who signed with the Saints in January after playing two years with Hamilton in the Canadian Football League. Breaux landed on that side of the border after a stint in the Arena League jumpstarted a football career that slowed because of a spinal injury that kept him from playing in college. The long road to get to the NFL may pay off for the 27-year-old.

At 6-1 and 196 pounds, Breaux has the kind of size that teams look for at corner and there were several other teams interested in his services before he landed in New Orleans. Breaux says he feels comfortable playing anywhere in the secondary and defensive coordinator Rob Ryan called him a “tremendous” player recently. Veteran cornerback Keenan Lewis gave a similar review of what he’s seen from Breaux thus far this spring.

I know they play different positions, but the Marcus Ball failure (CFL LB to NFL SS) has me a bit apprehensive about the transition from CFL CB to NFL CB.

I know Browner did it extremely well as have some others, but I was sure Ball's skillset would translate well as an NFL SS.

Glad to hear he's doing well in shells.

I think that if he's fully healed from his spinal injury then he can beat out everyone competing for that top back-up spot. His measurables are off the chart and he has so much experience.

lets see 7 CB and 7 S going into camp this year.

prefer keeping 6 CB myself this year.

CB/S that could kick a safety or two the curb?

Delvin Breaux, and the Damian Swann pick is looking more logical at this point than before. if he can return to his playing style in 2013 he will be a nice addition.

Stanley Jean-Baptiste? anyone dare guess? another pine riding draft pick the saints refuse to let go and try to develop? Nick Toon clone from the 2014 draft? at least we are moving up. Toon was a 4th in 2012 and SJB is a 2nd.

so my money is on Brian Dixon, and Terrence Frederick for that 6th and final CB position. Terrence has the inside track i think. he knows how to legally ride a mopped without getting arrested. Dixon is an athletic freak but instincts are a serious question.

I am glad to hear we have another CB in the mix. As for SJB I hope they work him into the SS position.

Well, we don't know how injuries and the like are going to shake out during camp...

But, we thought we were deep last year, remember?!?

However if a position of need comes up (i.e. interior offensive line, tight end) we could always make a trade...

We are running the 6 CB and 5 Safety sets.

The problem with the Adrian Arrington and Nick Toon comparisons is that both of those players actually showed some potential in training camps and pre-season games and occasional spot duty in actual NFL games.

None of which SJB has done yet.

I can't call him a disappointment before coaches actually put him out on the field. What I don't understand is after he started as "inactive", then got some snaps, then went back to "inactive". Almost as if he takes a step forward, then backwards.

Hopefully Dennis Allen and company carefully evaluate SJB in year 2 .. the competition at CB has become crowded and PJ, Swann are hungry.

I wouldn't be surprised that the scouts that were released were the cause of SJB being drafted so high

I am fond of the way we have left no stone unturned to fix a second were weakness on our D. The FO is to be commended for their ability to pursue unconventional avenues to find players. Guarded optimism is what I would characterize my opinion of this players acquisition. Hope that he fills the third CB position that no one on the saints D last year could.

Seriously, without pushing the pocket it will not matter. I don't mean sacks either, just moving the QB around. If we can't do that we are going to suck again.
