Unfazed by his draft slide, P.J. Williams sets his sights on winning the Saints’ nickel cornerback role

The book on P.J. Williams is that the New Orleans Saints may have gotten a steal.

Scouts and analysts around the league pegged Williams as a high second-round pick — perhaps a late first-rounder in a draft deep with cornerbacks. By the time the 78th pick rolled around, Williams was supposed to be long gone.

Disappointment sometimes sets in for a prospect who falls below his expected slot. After every draft, in nearly every NFL city, a rookie vows to make the teams who passed on him pay, no matter the circumstances of his slip.

Williams is not one of those rookies.

“My dream wasn’t to go in the first round,” he said. “My dream was to make it here.”

I like his attitude!

PJ is 1st round talent. Book it. We received a gift in the 3rd.

It will not surprise me if he becomes the eventual starter in New Orleans. This guy is no "project". I can't wait to see what Dennis Allen does with this kid at the corner position.

If Browner struggles (he had some problems in NE, even got benched in one game) this guy could step up and be a pleasant surprise.

Delvin Breaux ain't no slouch though... Gonna be an awesome competition for that nickel back job!

There is going to be some serious competition at all the CB positions. But the nickle will be the most interesting to me.

CB will be an exciting position group to watch this summer!

So wil:
- O line
- LBs
- D line
- Safeties
- WR's
- RB's
- Back up QB's
- Kickers
- TE's....

Damn, I'll bet the water boys are arm wrestling on the sidelines!!

He needs the desire to be the starter. Maybe that's why he fell in the draft.

I don't think he fell because of his "desire" maybe off the field issues, how can you question his will and passion for the game?

reason he fell?

As usual end of the season over hype. 2nd round skill set not first
Florida St is not known for producing discipline secondary players. free lances a lot
Off the field issues. plenty off ????? with the kid. but like ALL FSU players convictions are hard to get

I see Patrick Robinson skill set without the injury history. I think he has better instinct and reactions than PR.

What we have a solid slot prospect that might have enough quick twitch to his game to slide outside. now does he have NFL Instincts? good chance he does. very good chance.

Only problem is he's never played in the slot.

Thats got me wondering... whats the main trait that differentiates slot CB versus perimeter CB?

I know perimeter CB's have the sideline to help, and usually cover the elite WR's but slot guys must be prepared for left/right/short/deep usually by a cat quick Lance Moore type who gets a head start before being engaged by a CB.

And I wonder if it's really hard for a CB who played perimeter in college to adjust to playing the slot?

I really have no idea.

I would guess that short area quickness is probably the biggest reason as far as physical attributes go. Like you pointed out, the guys they're covering tend to be that type of player.
