Saints work to eliminate bad football ahead of 2015 season

Bad football as in squandering fourth-quarter leads, on the road and at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

Bad football as in losing the last five home games while scoring an anemic 85 points (17 PPG).

Bad football as in the second worst turnover differential in the NFL at minus-13.

Bad football as in among the worst NFL defensive units in terms of yards per game, rushing yards per game, third down percentage, red zone percentage and points per game.

Bad football as in going 3-3 against teams inside the worst division in football, including a season sweep by the lowly Atlanta Falcons.

All those indicators have triggered sweeping off-season changes on the coaching staff, scouting department and roster, prompting Payton to plant a street sign at the foot of the practice fields: “N. Compete Street.”

The only thing missing is an arrow pointing west with the message — “Levi’s Stadium, San Francisco … 1,923 air miles.”

“There needs to be that sense of urgency and we’ve been able to create (competition at every position this offseason),” Payton said Thursday.
