Evan Mathis released.

Should Saints make Play for Mathis . Mathis is an Elite LG. A one year deal to prove it . I would make it happen.

Ugh, you beat me to it! Anyway, I think they should go for it if the price is right.

Re: Evan Mathis released.

The price won't be right... Mathis will command elite guard money.

If we only had the cap space ...

But then again I didn't think we would be able to sign Byrd. What the hell do I know.

The cap room is there. Especially after this year. We recover like 20 million in dead money next year.

WTF?!?

Want to see this thread at the end of the season.

We've got talent on the offensive line, now.

Depth?!?

Who could afford this guy for depth?!?

If by some sort of Loomis magic he appears on the Saints roster he would be a slam dunk starter. The depth would be those already on the roster behind him.

next to unger and the new big boy from Stanford on the line. Drew won't get hit much. If the price is rights.

Yup. Give Drew time and nobody will ever miss Jimmy Graham or Kenny Stills. Hell, or Sproles or Bush. Given time I honesty believe there has never been a better QB.

Disclaimer: I am a 1967 homer ... but I still know my $hit.

“Evan Mathis has been available for trade for two years and there have been no offers,” Kelly said at the time.

Interesting that there were no takers pre-draft. Since he was cut, Philly gets zip in the supplemental as well. So, no one even offered a 7th?

The team that can pay 5 million a year for 2 years wins this one.

I guess Chip isn't only getting rid just the black guys, huh Shady?

I'm starting to wonder if Chip Kelly knows what the hell he is doing. He has cut or let go a lot of talent.

Yeah, I mean he has added what should amount to a pretty good defense, but on offense he has let go a lot of talent. Maybe he does...I don't know, but I know this- he is either boom or bust at this point. When you start doing these type of moves and they don't work out, well back to college you go. If they work out he'll be a genius

It will be nice to see what "His" team can do because he won 10 games the last two seasons primarily with Andy's guys

You don't know what Chip was asking for. I'm sure there were offers, just none that he liked.

Re: Evan Mathis released.

you have to consider it. price maybe out of the ball park but he would put to rest any doubts we have LG in a heart beat.

looking at the OG on the roster only Evans does not come with huge question marks

If the saints are going to make a super bowl run personnel wise this would be the signing to indicate that was the plan in 2015. the saints would quickly become a top 5 OL in the NFL.

It would definitely be a unit to eat up clock and keep the defense off the feild. that would make Rob look like a miracle worker yet again. when in reality he coaches a defense to stop a team in catch up mode, which is vastly different from a coaching a defense to stop teams from scoring at will.

never know he may join for a shot at the ring.

What an O Line we would have if this guy is nabbed up. We can get him, its just how bad do they want him. Drew with time makes every reciever a pro bowler. Will the real Nick Toon please stand up :)

Make it happen Loomis.

Re: Evan Mathis released.

It will be interesting to see where he ends up. On one hand, he is a very good LG. On the other hand, he is at the age where teams are reluctant to pay huge amounts for his services, especially at the guard position.

I really don't have any predictions as to what kind of money will be there for him which makes it hard to even know if the Saints could be in the running.

Re: Evan Mathis released.

I wouldn't mind picking this guy up but only for two years tops and I don't think we have the means cap wise to afford him and also anyone else we may need through the year. I really think we can be effective with what we've got and invest in a young guard in FA or high in the draft next year. We need to get a young line that can grow together so when Brees retires, they'll have that chemistry(in theory anyways) for whoever takes over at QB.

Four potential landing spots for Evan Mathis - NFL.com

He was scheduled to make $5.5, but wanted more
Seattle looks to be the ideal spot for him

At 34 years old, he is the oldest starting OG in the NFL. He was scheduled to make 6 million, refused a 1 million dollar raise so I'd assume he probably wants at least 8 million per season if not more.

He's from Alabama so maybe he wants to move back down South? He's Bob Baumhower's nephew by the way! Roll Tide!!!:p

We don't have $8 million for a guy who's likely to play one season with us.

Yeah as really if he wants to play. Then take a pay cut. If you want to keep on playing.

I say we offer him what he was already making.

I hear a lot of Eagle's players are pissed off at Chip's BS and just want out of that dumpster fire.

Maybe he just wants out and his contract demands are simply a ploy to get him cut so he can sign elsewhere for basically the same money.

Aren't the Feagles on the hook for his current contract? That means we can offer less.

I could buy that.

And if it truly is $5 million per year, I think we can make it happen with just a few personnel moves.

I was just reading the same info. My question is; do we save money by cutting anyone post June 1?

Well, we just signed DT Williams to a one year deal. This might make it too difficult to afford him.

our cap (and everyone's) is in flux until we know who the top 51 are. We have a lot of vets in the top 51 that probably won't make it: Hightower, Wilson, Phillips, Sanford? Harris? and who is Jerry Franklin? Every little bit helps- that's about 1.1 right there

I do think we have $5 million to scrape together if he would take that. Right now we are $3 million under.

No, the Eagles don't owe him anything, but he is a $2 mill cap hit
