New Orleans Saints backup quarterback Ryan Griffin needed more than 50 stitches to close facial lacerations he received after being struck with a champagne bottle during an argument earlier this month at a Central Business District lounge, New Orleans police records show.

The 25-year-old Tulane graduate, entering his third year with the Saints and battling veteran QB Luke McCown for a roster spot, was absent from a practice session last Wednesday (June 10) -- the only session open to media -- but practiced with the team as normal on Tuesday.

"We are aware of the situation and the matter is under investigation," said a Saints spokesman. "Ryan has been exemplary as a Saint and he has our full support."

The reported bottle attack began not long after Griffin and some friends arrived at Apres Lounge, 608 Fulton St., around 1:50 a.m. on June 7. According to an NOPD incident report obtained by NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune, Griffin told police he thought he "bumped into" a group of men already inside the lounge.

The club has cameras and credit card information.

Suspects should be apprehended within a few days.

Charges should be attempted manslaughter.

Is there such a thing as attempted manslaughter? I thought manslaughter was when you accidentally kill someone and therefore couldn't be something you attempt. I'd say it would be assault with a deadly weapon. I don't really know... I'm just sick of this "being disrespected" crap.

So it could be attempted murder if the accused acted willfully.

50 stitches, that is a massive gash. Get a body guard if you want to club or stay home.

Once I met Ricky Williams at a club. He had two of them waiting to pounce on me if I did not like his thoughts on getting a Jersey signed. Luckily, I did not have to drop them with a martini glass.

Ridiculous. This whole team has so many character flaws and off-field personnel issues right now, I don't even recognize it as being the Sean Payton Saints any more. What the &%$% is going on? Did Sean Payton ever actually come back from his suspension?

How much does a full bottle of champagne weigh?
This could vary from brand to brand due to the bottle used but an empty bottle is approximately 1.9 lbs and a full bottle 3.5 lbs.
