Study Says Saints Are No. 2 On List of "BandWagon" Fans

Study says Arizona Cardinals have most bandwagon fans in NFL

By Sean Wagner-McGough | Staff Writer

July 16, 2015 2:44 pm ET

...According to a new study conducted by Emory University, the Arizona Cardinals have the most bandwagon fans in the league. The study specifically says that Cardinals "fans are most responsive to winning percentage in the NFL based on our statistical model of attendance."...

Here's how the list shakes out:

1.Cardinals

2.Saints

3.Bills

4.Raiders

5.Redskins

6.Rams

7.Jaguars

8.Bengals

9.Chargers

10.Browns

Emory University also looked into other areas of NFL fandom. Among the most surprising of their discoveries was that Seahawks fans ranked very poorly in terms of "fan equity" in 2014. Fan equity measures "fans willingness to financially support their team." Meanwhile, the Cowboys ranked first in the NFL.

Anyways, you can read the full study here. https://scholarblogs.emory.edu/esma/...lity-analysis/

I can believe that. Before Payton got here we were pretty much totally irrelevent outside a handful of seasons. Why would anyone from a town that doesnt have an NFL team pick a perrenial loser to be their team of choice? We all watched them and cheered for them no matter what. Because they were ours and attached to the city. We had fun going to games win or lose because they were and are a part of us.
A team all of a sudden gets good and sure a lot of people who dont have an NFL team in their state are going to pick you. Everyone likes to pull for a winner.

I dont think the writer meant that WE are bandwagon fans.

The old Tulane stadium and the Superdome have always been packed for Saints games. We have a very long line of people waiting for season tickets and we're bandwagon fans? Emory University needs to take a look at all those empty seats in the Georgia Dome before they declare Saints fans to be bandwagon fans. Better yet, they can look at all the black and gold in the stands we we play the Falcons in their home stadium.

Hmmm...

That's actually the reason why I became a fan back in the day. That and their cool uniforms. :-)

Send your Kid to Emory in Atlanta and pay the ridiculous tuition.
Two things: This is what your paying for some off the wall Fan study.
Plus the risk of your student becoming a Falcons Fan.
Slow Football week I guess!

Re: Study Says Saints Are No. 2 On List of "BandWagon" Fans

there is only one other group of fans that compare to saints fans over the years. Pats fans. we both were losers for years and yet we both had loyalty no matter what. I remember the days wearing saints gear out of town getting laugh at. Grand parents lived right down the road from the pats stadium. early on i saw same love for a crappie team. But hell that is our team mentality rang out loud and clear. seahawk none of them compare

wish i can find the study done before we even made our first playoff game. pats and saints were listed as among the top 5 of all fan bases in loyalty. Both also ranked top 5 in knowledge of the game among the fan bases.

so i do not get this piece so much on a local level as much as nation wide.

Those fad happy fans that think offense should put up 100 pts a game. those i can do with out. :)

If being on the bandwagon consists of yelling at your dad when he was on the roof of the house turning the antenna while I'm ajusting the box that clicked to see about getting a semi-clear picture of the game count me in.

A bulk of Atlanta is made of up transplant fans and they're not even in the top 10? That guy has it made if he actually gets paid to write that stuff.

We have bandwagon fans, no doubt, just like most other teams. Hell, resurrect some of the threads from last year when we were not having the success we thought we would have to see them. But, die hard Saints fans are used to ups and downs with the team and always stay true. I would even venture to say, us older fans, (although the last 8-9 years have been awesome), are probably used to more downs and therefore aren't thrown off the wagon when they occur.

There is really only one criterion- season ticket sales. We've sold out 8 years in a row. We don't even sell single game seats.
Yes, like everyone, we have bandwagon fans, and also a 70,000 plus base.

I think you guys are taking this way to personal. The article doesnt pertain to us. It is not calling all Saints fans bandwagon fans.We are a small market team and we have all supported them and filled the Dome even when they were losing. We started winning and we attracted other fans. People flock to winners. If anything it is a compliment.

Living in the UK I personally think that New England has the biggest bandwagon fans

When ever anybody at work says I like NFL too, 80 percent of the time they say they are Patriot fans. Then promptly switch when they start playing poorly.

If being a bandwagon fan consists of having a pair of vice-grip pliars on your antenna, while your (ex)wife (#1) yells out the window, when the signal is only semi-snowy, because our tv came from Shreveport, when it wasnt showing the Cowboys!, and then sticking my head next to the am radio, fighting to hear as many words as you can to listen to a preseason game on the West Coast, being the ONLY Saints fan in Deep East Texas, where they arent even aware of a city called New Orleans, and planning special 6 hour drives (pre-Interstate 49) to see a team that never had a winning season, and bleeding black & gold... yep... I guess. Later being a season ticket holder in Houston.

This is the dumbest "study" I have ever heard. Obviously Emory University has some questionable academic abilities.

Best fans in NFL:
1. Us
2. Packers

I fell in love with the city of New Orleans first. I never had a favorite NFL team growing up because my dad was in the Navy and we moved every 2-3 years. We ended up in Pensacola, FL in 1997 when I was 12. When I was around 16 I discovered New Orleans and fell in love. That was also around the time of Kyle Turley's incident which I thought was awesome. As a heavy metal fan I loved the band Down and when I saw them at the House of Blues around '02 I saw Kyle Turley hanging out at the show. My love of the New Orleans metal bands combined with Turley's outlaw vibe was pretty much all it took for young me to become a Saints fan. I'm probably rambling but I just felt like reminiscing.

Glad you asked. Rocky Balboa.

I have loved football and Rocky as far back as I can recall.
Rocky is simple. The underdog that had no chance persevered with courage and determination.

To pick a favorite team in the NFL as a child, however, was a tougher choice. Being from Alaska, I was force-fed Seattle games. Even as a kid I wondered why the local stations would play the Seahawks games every Sunday when other games were much more appealing. Being over 2000 road miles away from Seattle doesn't make me desire the Seahawks as a home team.

I was the youngest child of five. To pick a team I would have to understand why my siblings picked their favorite team.
One liked the Hulk and heard of a guy named Czonka that many called the Hulk so he chose the Dolphins as his favorite team.
Another watched a freak of nature named Lawrence Taylor play for the Giants in 1981 and decided that the Giants would be his team.

But I wanted more than just a player. I wanted to like a team.

One Saturday, after Looney Tunes of course, I watched a Football Follies special on t.v. It was an epiphany! I was tired of the Seahawks (I don't recall any kid in school wearing Seahawks gear by the way) and I wasn't about to jump on the Steelers or Cowboys bandwagons like the other kids. The team that had it's own spot on the Football Follies was the team that I would love like a family member from that day on.

We are not bandwagon fans......we are loyal fans who have people jumping on our wagon when we play well. Which is pretty often! Our fan base grows and flows each new year.
