Saints sign tight end Alex Smith
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W. Va. -- The New Orleans Saints signed veteran tight end Alex Smith on Friday to replace injured rookie Jack Tabb. Smith, 33, played football at Stanford and was a third-round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2005. He played for the Cincinnati Bengals last season. Tabb suffered what appeared to be a knee injury during team work in practice on Thursday. He left the field on a motorized cart. If Tabb clears waivers, which is likely, he would be placed on the Saints' injured reserve list. Tabb, who played at North Carolina, signed with the Saints as an undrafted free agent in May. Smith was a starter in his first four seasons with Tampa and has bounced around the league as a reserve since then, playing for the Philadelphia Eagles (2009), Cleveland Browns (2010-2012) and Bengals (2013-2014). The Saints have been battered by injuries at tight end. In addition to Tabb, Josh Hill and Kevin Brock have missed time. The two remaining tight ends, Ben Watson and Orson Charles, got plenty of reps in Friday's scrimmage. New Orleans Saints sign tight end Alex Smith, waive injured rookie Jack Tabb | NOLA.com |

I still think the Graham deal was a good one for us. Drew
will find his targets... He just needs to be upright. |
Re: Saints sign tight end Alex Smith
Another thing the Graham deal did, and I used the Pittsburgh game this last season in support (Graham had no catches in that game as Pittsburgh overcommitted to him), is that Drew will now get back to spreading the ball around, regaining the advantage, character of unpredictability to the offense...

Drew throwing to an assortment of guys you may or may not know, which seemed to be our recipe for winning, than to one superstar. |

You didn't buy that running game Bullshinski, did you?!? Kidding aside, Ben Watson is the starter; Josh Hill will come in on 3rd down, passing packages... When it comes to Running Backs, Wide Receivers, Tight Ends, there really are no starters for the Saints, and many teams for that matter - there are only... SUB-PACKAGES... |
Re: Saints sign tight end Alex Smith
Alex is a throw back to days gone by for a TE. Gotta block and do some some receiving.
If the WR corp turns out to be SO SO then this is a solid signing to let the saints use Watson a bit more. Watson is to Graham as Smith is to Watson. you may drop in receiving yards but it is an increase in blocking skills i fully expect the saints to keep an eye on the waiver wire. we passed on TE and WR in draft so it only makes sense. This is a pound the rock type of signing. |

what matters. They play on turf, not the red carpet. A few years ago, I'd never heard of Pierre Thomas or Marques Colston, and neither had you. |
