Saints Defense Repeated Offenses

As the comedy of mental errors played out, the Saints defensive sideline devolved into fire drill of disorganization. Coaches shouted instructions and play calls over top of each other. Panicked defenders ran on and off the field so hastily it was difficult to keep track of who was coming and who was going.

Saints defense's repeat offenses are disturbing: Jeff Duncan | NOLA.com

Training camp may only be a week old, and this might only be a scrimmage, but holy sh**, seriously?
There are 6-7 defense coaches including Allen and Ryan on the sideline. No one calls timeout, no one can count? How does a coach who is watching every aspect of a play not notice a hole, or an extra player?
SP ought to be pissed.

We pretty much slapped some lipstick on this pig and expected it to not be a pig. Not feeling good about this.

It is very disappointing and frankly makes me believe that the magic is gone and we are going down hill sooner than I thought.

There's a lot of changes going on and maybe it's a mental game, similar to what they do in boot camp(s) ... run you ragged at first, up/down, left/right, start/stop, too-slow-get-back ... keep 'em in a general state of confusion until they finally stop thinking too much and can absorb what they're trying to teach. At least I hope it's something like that going on,.

I have a feeling SloMo is right.

And if not, it's still early enough to correct and improve.

Besides, it's not like most of the offenders will make the roster anyway

see, I don't think the problem is at all with the players--100% coaching.
A guy who has been a Saint all of 8 days shouldn't be in a position where he doesn't know when or where he is supposed to be.
It really shows a lack of preparation and guidance from the coaches.
This is Pop Warner/PeeWee football stuff: you are a middle linebacker and run onto the field and see another MLB...what do you do? The question is, why aren't the coaches seeing it?

If this was something new i might go with this as a viable option. But since this is a repeat i am skeptical.

Rob is the head chef and the sideline is his kitchen. If he can get the other cooks on the same page and working as a unit the dishes will be a train wreck. I would have sent that plate of back to the kitchen.

lets see what happens as we trim the roster.

This is not unusual for a Ryan run defense.

I'd rather this happen now, with Dennis Allen watching and taking notes, so it can get corrected during the PreSeason and won't happen during the Regular Season and hopefully not during PostSeason...

Saints Defense Gets Ryan Fired Up

Fundamentals. Back to the basics. The one thing a defense should do is attack. Work off of that. Don't get these amazing athletes thinking too much.

If that was the plan, then Ryan should be canned and a defensive coordinator who excels in that should have been brought it.

Ryan's forte is multiple schemes and confusing the offenses. He likes to bring the rush from strange places and disguise his coverages. That sounds great, and when it works, it is a thing to behold.

The drawback with that is that it takes strong leadership among the players on the field to get everyone lined up. It also requires versatility among those players. If players aren't well-versed in it, then confusion can happen easily. This is compounded by the reputation that Ryan is a creative thinker but not the best teacher.

I had hoped all offseason the Saints would make a change. With the personnel we had on defense and the need to get back to a details apporach on the field, I never believed Ryan was the man for the job.

I hope I'm wrong, but I think the task given to Ryan is not one he is suited for.

Re: Saints Defense Repeated Offenses

Going to be completely honest and I thought this the moment they brought in Dennis Allen. If 6 or so games into the season the defense isn't looking any better they will fire Rob and elevate Dennis to D-coordinator.

I don't think payton will have the patience to keep ryan on for the entire season if the defense is still looking confused. Especially with the attention they placed on defense this offseason (bringing over browner, drafting a bunch of defensive players, etc).

I really like Rob as a person but it's time to produce like he did his first season (or at least get us to a middle of the pack defense) or we can't keep him around.

If we could just fix the missed tackles from last year, we could probably add two more possessions per game.
That was a problem seems like every week.
We even had trouble getting off the field when we had teams in 3rd and long.
The difference between 2nd-and-8 AND 2nd-and-2 is HUGE.
If we start to control the line of scrimmage, everything on the back end will improve.
It is still 11 on 11, and at most, 5-6 people in your space.
I'm hoping our new additions can get the job done in the moments that change the game.
