Andrus Peat gets heavy workload in Saints’ scrimmage

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W. Va. — Andrus Peat got all the work he could handle in the first scrimmage of his Saints career.

And then some.

Peat took snaps with all three units in Friday’s scrimmage, stepping in at left tackle with the starters in place of starter Terron Armstead, who was limited to no contact again.

“Well, we didn’t rep Terron, and he will be back on Sunday, so any time there is a tackle or one lineman out, we would add a rep or two so those younger guys can learn,” Saints coach Sean Payton said.

The workload took a toll on Peat, who struggled through the eight 100-yard runs that the team went through to finish the practice.

Veteran Zach Strief said Peat’s conditioning will eventually get up to speed.

“It’s a process. The first thing to recognize is he’d just finished a 13-play drive and then ran 800 yards, so it’s not ideal for a lineman,” Strief said. “The conditioning stuff is going to come.”

Then ran eight 100 yards sprints.
So he played the entire scrimmage, finished the scrimmage with a 13 play drive, then ran 800 yards immediately after that?

Wow, thats tough for a big man.

Dude is a bust. Lets pay him an outrageous contract now and cut him so we have more dead money.

He needs as many reps as he can.

We're lucky he didn't drop.
Conditioning is one thing... taking snaps with all units and then still doing a full regimen afterwards is another

Being out of shape goes to a lack of fire and passion for the game. That concerns me.

Not necessarily. His college coach might have wanted him at one weight while Payton may want him at another weight that's more suitable for the NFL and the system Payton wants to run. Especially if Payton wants him to fill in at different spots on the line from time to time.

Better he get roughed up now than in games.

Relax folks. He'll be fine.

No one said he was out of shape.
He's a 316 pound man who took more snaps than any o-lineman and then had to sprint a half a mile. No worries

I look at it a different way... Whether we want to believe it or not Peat's reputation coming out of college was that he was soft. Why else would a supposedly "consensus #1 left tackle" slip to our pick at 13?! I thought left tackles went in the top 5. This is Payton saying "Yep, you're soft... But I'll make a man out of you."

That being said, Peat will never beat out Armstead.

The problem with Armstead is he's been injured, and is currently injured albeit minor. He may not need to beat him out.

He played very well in the B&G scrimmage. I can't understand how Duncan says Friday was a total disaster for Peat.

I keep hearing how great Armstead is, and I dont necessarily doubt that, but until he took over for Charles brown we were saying the same thing about him that we are saying about Pete. Payton only put him in because he basically had too or Brees was going to get killed. Armstead got his ass handed to him that first game but improved every game after.
I just dont know how he gotten to the "Pro Bowl type tackle" status that I have heard some media people talk about so quickly.

Practice only takes you so far. Its when you get to play in the real games you really start to develop. Armstead got thrown in the river and quickly learned how to swim. I have great confidence that Peat will do the same once called upon.
Peat being a little off in his conditioning is not surprising, his school ended really late so he couldn't come to OTAs and such where the rest of the team were working out. I am pretty sure that the Pro game is a heck of a lot faster than the college game and that will take a toll on you until you get your conditioning up to par.

soft player? i would not go that far. Soft and not all that nasty is two different things

The knock was he is a little to mellow. he really never showed a nasty edge to his game. he is a walking stereo type type of California. Needs to get that fire stoked in the belly.

He is going to make it as a tactician not a mauler.

Peat was better than when he arrived.

Next week he'll be better than the week before.

Let the kid get his reps, make his mistakes and learn.

Some of you are too hung up on his draft status and it's too early to declare anyone a bust.

Maybe Byrd.... :)

Everyone said he is out of shape. LOL. Some have said alarmingly so. It is what it is.

I've never said anything about him being out of shape, so it can't be "everyone." :-P

Cruise I couldn't disagree more. I would be very concerned if he were starting week one and had poor work ethic. Peat will be conditioned when we need him.

Relax ;).

He did I think 30 snaps total (I heard) & then ran 8 100's. I don't think that is out of shape. I see a difference between in shape & in game shape. They are bringing him up to game shape!

Hell, I would have been dead after the 3rd play of the 13 play drive!!

My current team are running a very uptempo offence right now and this past saturday we had a 15 play scoring drive, when I got back to the bench I was so dead. The rook is a pro, he'll be allright.
