C.J. Spiller absent from Saints' scrimmage
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. -- The New Orleans Saints’ injury list seems to have a revolving door on it. Every time two or three guys return to the field, two or three new guys go missing.
On Friday, running back C.J. Spiller, guard Tim Lelito and defensive end Akiem Hicks were absent for unspecified reasons. Coach Sean Payton declined to elaborate on any of them -- though he did indicate that Spiller’s absence was injury-related. Teams aren’t required to reveal injury information during training camp. UPDATE: A source described Spiller's absence as nothing more than a day of rest. It's too early to get worked up over any of the injuries until we see how long they linger. But all three of those guys are awfully important. Spiller is expected to be one of the most dynamic playmakers for a Saints offense that needs new go-to guys to emerge after parting ways with Jimmy Graham, Kenny Stills and Pierre Thomas in the offseason. It was a shame we didn't get to see him in action during the scrimmage. Players will be off Saturday before returning to the practice field Sunday evening. Here’s a rundown of some other notable injuries: ▪ Cornerback Keenan Lewis returned to the field and fully participated in Friday’s scrimmage. Offensive tackle Terron Armstead and linebackers Anthony Spencer and Dannell Ellerbe were in full pads, but they were limited to individual work and did not participate in the scrimmage. Tight end Josh Hill and receiver Brandon Coleman were in “shells and shorts” and did not participate in the scrimmage. ▪ Safety Jairus Byrd remained sidelined, as expected, though he did some individual work in sweats with trainers. Rookie cornerback P.J. Williams and receiver/returner Jalen Saunders also remained absent. ▪ The Saints worked out two unidentified tight ends after practice. They will likely make a roster move in the wake of undrafted rookie Jack Tabb’s knee injury from Thursday. C.J. Spiller absent from Saints' scrimmage - New Orleans Saints Blog - ESPN |
Re: C.J. Spiller absent from Saints' scrimmage
The way some of the players are coming up "noticeably absent" is kinda spooky...
Makes me wonder if Jack Nicholson is running around busting our guys in the knees or in the joystick with an ax handle at Camp Shining... |
Re: C.J. Spiller absent from Saints' scrimmage
Its football.
People have panicked all camp over every injury, only to see that player return to practice a day or two later. We've been lucky so far. |
Re: C.J. Spiller absent from Saints' scrimmage
No worries here.

There hasn't been a whole lot of positivity come out of our camp. My early optimism is starting to fade :(

I guess the "injuries" are offsetting a lot of the other goodwill.

Re: C.J. Spiller absent from Saints' scrimmage
Not too concerned with days of rest or minor injuries at this stage of camp. It's early and teams are gonna be cautious.
|
Re: C.J. Spiller absent from Saints' scrimmage
As far as we no it's just minor stuff... The only one I'm worried about is Byrd... But as far as his play Rafael Bush has been lighting it up so I hear...

Re: C.J. Spiller absent from Saints' scrimmage
if he was a rookie or young layer - maybe more worrisome. BUT - CJ knows his stuff. If it really is just a day off to rest I think that's a good idea!

Re: C.J. Spiller absent from Saints' scrimmage
The only thing about CJ is he's never been healthy in his career. Great talent. Brutal game especially for RB's.

Move along............nothin' to see here. Move along now.

Re: C.J. Spiller absent from Saints' scrimmage
Payton will use Spiller like Bush and Sproles so there is no issue with any of this
|
Re: C.J. Spiller absent from Saints' scrimmage
Used sporadically as a scat back like Sproles was, and this cat can contribute mightily.
He's not an everydown back, and we aren't going to use him as such. |
