What Sean Payton said after Sunday's Saints' training camp practice

Were the returners wearing boxing gloves?

"Yes, we did that in the spring once. It really forces them to really put their bodies in a great position to catch a ball so it is a way of taking their hands per say away and keeping their elbows together and really locating the ball with their feet, getting set."

Last preseason you had Pete Carmichael call some plays in games, are you going to do any of that this preseason?

"Yeah he did last week. We will keep looking at how we do that, but he called all of it last week. He did a good job."

Can you talk about C.J. Spiller's surgery this weekend?

"Next question."

Is it conceivable that Garrett Grayson could emerge as the backup ahead of Luke McCown or Ryan Griffin and how far would he have to go to do that?

"I think that we have not set in stone for instance this is how our two is. Obviously Luke's (McCown) competing. Ryan Griffin, Garrett, those guys are all handling their snaps well and as camp goes on we will get a better feel for what our plans are. Overall those guys have been handling the reps that they are getting very well. Certainly you would like experience at that position and yet I wouldn't say it is a prerequisite."

How well did Garrett Grayson play in his frist live game action.

I thought both Griffen and Grayson moved the team well. Grayson did have one batted down but like Brees he will learn the angles. Both looked more impressive than McCown.

I agree I think McCown is a really good guy but the young guys might be passing him

For the investment, I'd keep both Griffin and Grayson...

If Brees goes down, even an experienced backup at the helm of a Payton offense is not going to be enough to offset a suspect defense...

You'll have more leverage, better bargaining chip in trading Griffin than a McCown since Grayson seems to be Payton's guy going forward...

The two younger quarterbacks looked impressive; really liked how Griffin settled down after a first couple of downs of the nerves...

Well, to be fair, RG1 should be good enough by now. If he is not, time to move on. Maybe SP has already moved on in light of the drafting of Grayson.

We have an open man crush on the New England Patriots and Bill Belichick. We seem to be more focused when practicing and playing them in the preseason versus playing the Texans.

In 2006 Payton went to Robert Kraft and asked if we could model our franchise after theirs and the rest is history. If you haven't read Sean Payton's book Home Team I highly recommend it. It gives a really good insight into how the Saints operate.:bng:
