Just quick notices
I have an official man crush on Swann... I really believe that he is going to be very good for us. I love how physically he plays, and he is always near the ball.
Kevin williams had a few plays last night that may have gone unnoticed because other people made the play, but he (even at 13 years) is better than what we have had the last few seasons. Have to watch his play count, but he could be huge help for us. Hawthorne did much better in coverage last night. Khaka (I cant spell that) had a great game. I loved ourr opening defense with both williams and jenkins in, very cool. Thought Jenkins had a quietly decent game You may not have heard Anthony's name last night but he played great coverage against the ass. swann, sjb, are our future, I think. Swann starts by end of this year or next season |
Re: Just quick notices
Brees looked great.
Ingram and Robinson are ready. Cooks has superstar skills.. The OLine did really well. Snead is for real. Coleman is still a work in progress. Toon is done. Run defense was good. Kikaha improved from week 1. Looks the part. Pass rush is still not good. SJB, Swann and Wilson played well. Safety play has been unimpressive. Although Warren just makes plays. Kickers don't make me feel confident. Of course, they never have. No injuries. Amen. |
Re: Just quick notices
Very impressed the way the defense played last night, love the new linebackers, and the secondary was pretty awesome! Considering that the entire secondary last night was 2nd string players made it even more impressive. What may be an issue is the way the defense played during the second half, that could be an indication that the Saints are not very deep in some areas, especially when it comes to guys who can get pressure on the QB.

kickers, huh???? we actually have one with a big leg |
Re: Just quick notices
Front seven played much better. Happy and Spencer looked sharp. Hawthorne even looked better.
No Gronk, no Edleman. I think the backup secondary did what they were supposed to do. Richardson and Davison are impressive. Cooks is our #1 receiver. Colston didn't look sharp. I want to see more from Coleman. WR 4 is still wide open. |
Re: Just quick notices
Pierre Warren is excellent tackler. Love this kid. It would be stupid if he doesn't make the team (again).

Re: Just quick notices
I focused on watching big ol' #73 Jahri Evans as long as the ones were on the field. He looked really solid. Good push in the running game and anchoring good in the pass-pro. I especially liked how he got out on the early screen.

Re: Just quick notices
My quick thoughts from last night ...
Cooks - is a special player that could turn in to a freak. Murphy - we all feel he may take it to the house on any given play. Coleman - would like to see him more with the 1's next week. Kikaha - he is a gamer and will improve every single day at practice. Once he polishes his technique.. watch out. Swann - I like the swagger - unafraid to take chances & is physical, good tackler. Colston - still shaking off the cobwebs but no doubt he will be fine. Brees - next question. |

Kikaha really impressed me, he tackles very well and plays the run much better than I expected for a guy labelled as a pass rusher. Many people said Swann wouldn't make the cut but he's definitely showing he deserves a spot, he's a physical corner, sometimes too much but that can be taught! Murphy - like you said, any time he touches the ball people are holding their breath, the guy is so quick and looks like he could go the distance at any point! |

A little better with a straight speed rush on the outside. Swim moves and those other quick counter moves made him look pretty silly out there to be honest. once that big tall body gets from under those feet he looks like a skyscraper swaying during an earthquake trying to block the quickness. just takes too long for him to recover. maybe after last week he focusing too much on the true speed rush and set himself up for the counter moves a bit too much. but he did not look as bad as he did in Baltimore. Too be honest he did not look that bad there either. upgrade from Harris without a doubt. Run blocking at the first level was great. he pushed people all around Run blocking at the second level was better but still needs work. he just seems slow to find his target at time. Looping his way to his assignment vs a more direct line. arriving a step or two too later to help the runner out. All in all I say he showed improvement across the board but still needs some more coaching up. baby stepping. |
Re: Just quick notices
I will tack on some of what I saw
- Drew is back, word of his demise has been GREATLY exaggerated(by Peter King) - Cooks would have been ROY if he hadn't broke his thumb last year(Can a WR win MVP honors) - Run defense is solid, they just need to work on wrapping up. Blount was stuffed in the backfield on multiple occasions and slipped through for no gain or 1-2 yards. - Defense is swarming to the ball. They looked like the Seattle team from 2013 - Ingram can catch! - We have no depth(offense or defense) |

CB Wilson looked decent as well. Gotta keep Pierre Warren.
Anyone miss Junior? |

In fact, I think we might be a better fit as a base 4-3 defense now. DE-Jordan DT-Williams DT-Jenkins (Davison) DE-Hicks (Richardson) WLB-Hawthorne (Ellerbe) MLB-Anthony (Hawthorne) SLB-Edebali (Kikaha) |

Edebali's motor is highly impressive. I love how relentless he is. Seeing him chase down a play 30 yards downfield after rushing the passer was great.
Peat's athletic ability is staggering. Once he takes over for Strief (2016 maybe) the Saints will have the two most athletic tackles in the league. |

Re: Just quick notices
We gotta keep Warren and yes i have a man crush on him but the guy does good when on the field, he plays free safety as natural as Byrd does when healthy. Im afraid he won't make the team again though. I hear he is on the bubble again which is ashame because last year when he played he made plays. I think the brass is too high on Bush though I'm not, he will knock the piss outta ya but he is a strong safety playing free safety and sometimes looks like a fish out of water. I hope the coaches get it right this year and keep him.

Re: Just quick notices
I like warren but my one knock on him is that he is not a solid tackler. His field awareness and ballhawk ability is exceptional. To keep him, who do we let go? Bush just signed his contract, can't see spending more dead money. Vinnie, he play strong safety and solid tackler.
It's gonna come down to how reliable Byrd to be able to suit up if they carry Warren IMHOP |

Re: Just quick notices
Peat looked better
This scheme helped kikaha ( who spells his name right) the most Brees sharp.... fully healed means no excuses... I wouldn't play him again this preseason McCown is done Murphy, Snead are making this team offensively Cooks is a number one Wide Receivers look set Triple C's Joe Morgan, Jalen Saunders, and Snead.... Jones to the practice squad |
Re: Just quick notices
I would like to see Griffin get a chance to play with the second lineup. Would give a better idea of where he stands compared tom McCown.

I also read that the Pats left a lot of their 1's and 2's in the game Saturday to help Garappolo's development and confidence since he'll be their starter for the 1st 4 games. I'd like to see us do a little of that with Griffin in game 3. |
Re: Just quick notices
Ryan still looks lost on the side line.
