Drew Brees: ‘I got away from my mechanics last year’

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees missed two weeks during training camp in 2014 with an oblique injury. He told ESPN’s Ed Werder that he felt his mechanics suffered as a result of the injury.

“I think I got a little away from my mechanics last year as the season wore on,” said Brees, who spent two months working on those mechanics. “Part of it is probably attributable to the oblique injury in camp. I probably came back — not too soon — but wanted to come back so soon, that on the road to recovery I altered my mechanics and overcompensated and developed some bad habits.”

Brees, 36, still tied for the NFL lead with 4,952 passing yards in 2014. But he threw 17 interceptions as the Saints finished 7-9.

Brees made his preseason debut Saturday night against the New England Patriots after sitting out last week.

He finished 8-of-10 with 159 yards and the two scores.

It might seem like a very small deal but on that level mechanics is everything.

Mighty PC of Drew.

Drew's #1 issue last year was the a gorilla on his back every time he and the offense went on the field. Having to carry Rob Ryan and that defense was too much. All the greats will tell you there is nothing worse than having the pressure of knowing you MUST score on every possession. Even before you suite up for the game.

Also comes on the heels of SP's suspension when we expected Brees to carry the team.

Especially a QB like Brees who utilizes clean mechanics to compensate for what's considered a weak arm. I wonder if this could have accounted for some of his poor deep throw timing.

I am pretty sure it had everything to do with it.

I knew his mechanics were off and that his oblique was bothering him more than he let on.

We never did really find out what caused this injury? Was he making too many babies?

I've used the same mechanic for 30 years. :)
