A "pretty impressive" workout convinced the New Orleans Saints to give a longer look to tight end Chris Manhertz, a former college basketball player with only a few months of football experience.

Saints coach Sean Payton praised Manhertz's size but said "obviously he has a lot of things to learn."

The Saints signed Manhertz on Monday and waived tight end Michael Egnew.

Manhertz, 23, signed with the Buffalo Bills on a reserve/future deal last December but was waived earlier this month.

Before signing with the Bills, Manhertz had never worn pads or a helmet, according to the Buffalo News.

The 6-foot-6, 255-pound New York native was a three-time captain on the Canisius basketball team. He started 96 of the team's 98 games.

"He's big and real athletic when you see his size and stature," Payton said.

Teams must cut their rosters from 90 to 75 players on Sept. 1, so Manhertz has just one week to convince coaches he's worth keeping around.

Even if he makes it to the final cut-down date on Sept. 5, Manhertz is far more likely to land on the practice squad than the 53-man roster.

Likely makes the practice squad to help prep for the tall TE's in our division.

Never even worn pads before last season....

What kind of practice against tight ends we face is that?

It wouldn't surprise me one bit if he starts the season and Brees throws him to look great.

Being on the scout team. The average height is around 6'5 in our division. Atlanta's 3rd TE is 6'8. He's a pretty smart guy and a good leader. If he can pick up where he left off with the Bills and improve some more it could be a good investment.

Practice squad is where he will have time to learn the ropes.

Football is a completely different head. You have to have a level of meanness/crazy to play it. He's big and athletic enough it's just a matter of how bad he wants to play the game.
