Who's your #2 QB?

McCown or Griffin?

Grayson seems destined for practice squad - safely...

Other than having the job for the previous two seasons. I haven't seen anything from McCown that makes me think he's got the #2 locked.

I want to see Griffin get the start next week and if he does I bet he'll outshine Luke and win the #2

As much as I can't believe I am saying this, Griffin looks like a better #2 at this point.

Re: Who's your #2 QB?

Griffin should stay and McCown leaves. McCown has no upside, what you see is what you get with him and that ain't much. I believe the other two have more potential if they can get experience with 1st or 2nd defenses in preseason.

I like McCown but agree with ya'll about Griffin. Upside wins.

Re: Who's your #2 QB?

I think they should cut both of them and possibly bring Griffin to the practice squad. I don't think you can cut Grayson without someone claiming him.

Does it matter? Brees goes down and we are screwed.

I wouldn't attempt to put Grayson on the practice squad. He is liable to be snagged up. Brees, Griffin and Grayson... we carry 3 this year!

I think that we are screwed even with Brees. Has nothing to do with the offense this coaching staff and front office has no idea how to put a decent defense together face the facts we haven't had a really decent defense sine the mid 80's with the exception of the Super Bowl year and that was cause of the turnovers

Re: Who's your #2 QB?

We'll see who lands the job. But I suspect it's more complicated than just the ol' "eyeball test."

McCown looks washed up, but who was it that held the field goals in the Saints NFC Championship and Super Bowl? A washed up grizzled 40 year old QB named Mark Brunell. We know Brees likes McCown, seems to get along well with him. Chemistry in the clipboard/baseball cap area of the field, is important. Payton likes young guys, but in the past he's also leaned towards veteran QBs with shaky knees and sharp eyes; he likes to have experienced guys in that conversation on the sidelines, during time outs, almost like an extra coach looking at Polaroids on the bench with the team.

McCown gave up the clumsy fumble but then he also kinda sorta made up for it on the 2 minute drive that resulted in the 53 yarder. He had another 2 minute drive that looked really good last week.

The eyeballs say "anybody but McCown," but knowing Payton and Brees, I would not be at all surprised if McCown ultimately makes it and survives another year. Do not want to ever see McCown on Sunday, though. Unless the division is clinched and we are resting.

Re: Who's your #2 QB?

I would really hate to lose a roster spot keeping 3 QB's and I doubt Grayson makes it to practice squad. I have concerns Griffin wouldn't either. But I would vote for Grayson getting the #2 only because of the investment in him, letting McNown walk and trying to push Griffin to the PS and hope for the best.

I agree. I think coach will stay with the vet but my vote would be RG. I rather take the upside than an old journeyman.

McCown has the least value to us but the most value to another team. Grayson is the future and won't make it to the PS. Griffin has all the potential but we don't know what his ceiling is......we know McCowns ceiling and it's not much more than a game manager. I hope we keep Griffin and Grayson.

see, I disagree: McCown's value is he knows our system, presumably has a good relationship with Brees, etc. He doesn't offer much to anyone else.
He certainly wouldn't start elsewhere (or he would have tested that market) and how much does he offer as a backup? Not real dynamic, no great history, and nothing for the future.
Perspective: he has thrown for 2000 yards...in his career

Griffin is II. Grayson is III. McCown is somewhere else doing something else.

McCown would be great if the receivers could wear orange cones and if he didn't have to face a pass rush.

Griffin. Which mean Payton will choose McNown.

Re: Who's your #2 QB?

Tough call for me, my thought process usually would center around Brees not being available, who would be the best fit for a few games. IMO that is probably McCown. As for upside, I agree with everyone that guy is Griffin. In a post from several months ago, I predicted Grayson would wind up on IR this year, that could still hold true. I still believe either Griffin or Grayson may wind up on IR after one of them gets a case of stomach cramps or breaks a fingernail.

I don't see Payton cutting McCown.... He hasn't looked great this preseason but that's Payton's guy n always talks highly of him n interviews

There is no way Grayson clears waviers. We will carry 3 this year. Griffin would be who I want but I'm sure McCown will get it based on SP's past love affair with him.

This would be our best case scenario. Griffin would be our #2 but be palced on the PS and brought up in case of a injury. No way Grayson would clear waivers. He has talent and teams know this. It may take 3 years to pull it out but the talent is there.

I hate that. If Brees went down, an NFL defense won't fear Payton's press conference and how much he loves a player. We haven't had a competent backup since Chase Daniel. BTW, can we get Chase back??

Re: Who's your #2 QB?

My #2 would probably be McClown. Short term obviously.

Just a guess is that Payton still hasn't found THE qb he wants to invest in yet. Which means to me, McClown is a bandaid that Payton will keep short term to bide time to pull the trigger on the QB that really impresses him.

I think being a former QB, Payton's recipe hasn't been matched yet as far as what he has a vision for.

Just my 2

Re: Who's your #2 QB?

I think if we cut McCown that he would be a phone call away. don't know that anyone needs a holder that badly
Would love to see RG have a great game and solidify the # 2 spot, but I honestly don't see it.
Question is, who is the best option if Drew gets hurt? That guy might not even be on the roster right now. Campbell, Freeman, whoever the Bills cut? Scary

Yes! Go for the gamble and try to get Griffin past waivers and onto the PS then bring him up to start if Brees injured.

Re: Who's your #2 QB?

H*ll, McCown is better than anything Buffalo has, return the favor of Byrd and trade him and gets a fifth, sixth round draft pick...

Now that we have Jeff Ireland, we should give this guy as many draft picks we can obtain...

Ryan Griffin will probably have more trade value though; he's a starter, at the least, in this league...

Question is: If Brees goes down, which of the three remaining quarterbacks could get this team as it is now, to the playoffs?

And that is the question you have to factor in with the long term considerations when deciding which three you go to battle with into the season...

McCown or Griffin or Grayson?

All three are up on the trading block IMO.

Re: Who's your #2 QB?

The number 2 has to be game ready. I pick McCown.
Have to be able to make the progressions...1 - 2 - 3 - throw it away.
Manage the game...don't give it away.
I think McCown would do that best in Payton's schemes.
I think he's seen enough not to have to think too much or over think it.
Push comes to a shove, one of the other could be called back up.
Brees has been reasonably healthy for like 8 years in a row.
Not even a sprained ankle.
I'm scared.

Grayson is not ready and would hate to destroy his confidence. I think he can be in a year or two. SP called him out and said he wants him as the backup. I dont think sean doe that if he doesnt see potential

Re: Who's your #2 QB?

IMO Griffin and Grayson to the PS

Danno 09-03-2015 05:34 PM

Re: Who's your #2 QB?

There is absolutely ZERO chance that Grayson goes to the practice squad. Are ya'll insane? Stop it, stop it now.

Grayson is our #3 QB, without question.

The real debate is who is our #2 between Griffin and McCown.

My guess is Griffin gets cut and we keep McCown. McCown has been praised for his coach-like counselling to all of our QB's. Its obvious he'll be a coach one day.

And If Drew were to miss 3 or 4 games, I'm more convinced McCown can stop the bleeding until Drew returns more so than RG4, and I really really like RG4.

RG4 might surpass McCown in that 4 or 5 game fill-in scenario, but I don't see it yet. Maybe tonight changes things, They're awfully close.
