Technically..he was not "hunting" alligators. They happen to stumble across one and it became dinner.

Bear Grylls safety staff is there to ensure no harm comes to the high profile celebrities participating in his shows. That poor alligator had a better chance of becoming a pocketbook before he could snap at anyone.
