Are the New Orleans Saints the worst team in the NFC?

1 Attachment(s)
After losing the NFC South to the Carolina Panthers by a half game last year, the New Orleans Saints figured to have a course correction in 2015. Drew Brees was due to have another big season, the defense couldn’t be much worse than its No. 31 ranking from last season (even if keeping Rob Ryan as coordinator seemed inexplicable) and Vegas pegged the Saints as preseason favorites to get back to the top of the division.

But now, after a respectable loss to the Arizona Cardinals in Week 1, then a baffling home loss to 2014’s worst team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, in Week 2, there’s every reason to wonder if the Saints aren’t only the worst team in their division, but in the entire conference?

Nearly every team in the NFL will experience a bad loss at some point in the season. They’ll catch a team on the wrong day or come out flat and notch an L instead of the expected W. This loss to Jameis Winston and the Bucs felt a lot different. It was like two evenly matched opponents fighting a battle of attrition.

Winston played a perfectly acceptable game — far better than his debut — but was hardly extraordinary in his first NFL victory. He threw for a touchdown and ran for another, but had a key fumble, the process of which, summed up the game pretty well.

On a third-and-3 from his own 27, Winston fumbled the ball. New Orleans, down 23-13 at the time, recovered. The Saints then gained one yard on three plays and missed a 42-yard field goal. Like I said, battle of attrition.

Surely the headline is hyperbole. The Saints can’t be the worst team in the NFC! Not the franchise with four playoff appearances in the last six seasons (including a Super Bowl win) and a Hall of Fame quarterback who passed Dan Marino for third on the all-time pass completions list in Sunday’s loss. But the following are all facts:

• New Orleans lost a home game to a team that finished 2014 with a 2-14 record and had the No. 1 pick in the 2015 draft.

We sure play like one.

Re: Are the New Orleans Saints the worst team in the NFC?

This is what happens when you screw a couple of drafts and sign the wrong players to large contracts only to get stuck paying 25% of your cap to players that no longer play for you.

I may not go as far as saying the worse just unlike the last rebuild we did way back when the cap was not the issue.

2017 is the year. almost every old timer with a big contract is a free agent. so the saints can ill afford yet another draft in 2016 to go bust.

Growing pains in the poor house is never a good thing. A loss in the division hurts I know. To Tampa makes it hurt just a bit more.

But I am not giving up hope.

Re: Are the New Orleans Saints the worst team in the NFC?

Yeah we are.

We are easily the most unbalanced and underachieving team.

Whenever our defense plays well, our offense either can't score, throws interceptions or Fumbles the ball.

Time to move on from what we've had the past 10 years - Brees, Payton and Loomis need to go.

I think we are. And the worst part is that I live in Milwaukee and my mother-in-law is visiting from Dallas. It's going to be a long freaking season.

Re: Are the New Orleans Saints the worst team in the NFC?

As long as Drew and SP feel they need to score every time they have the ball there will be an issue. way to easy to game plan for a team under stress. add into a bunch of young new faces and there will be a time of adjustment till trust is established with some one any one out there.

On more time. the catch phrase for the year is

JUST NEED TIME TO JELL

The worst team? No!

The worst PLAYING team?

Yes, we are currently the worst team in the NFCS.

Until further notice, we suck.

We are what our record says we are. We may be worst than last years team.

After today's performance, yes we are. Next week it could be any number of teams including the Bucs (fools gold win today).

Week to week league.

From what I just read on NOLA.com Drew's shoulder is injured and weaker than ever. This may be the final curtain call for his career. That's ok because I am ready for a big change.

Hey, it could be worse. We could be extra talented team like Eagles and still suck. I'm tellin ya, Chip Kelly and Sean must have spent some time together this offseason.

Worst team in the NFL is between the Eagles and Saints

We have lost 6 straight n the dome.... I mean I would put the Bears the worst.... But we are probably right after them....

Re: Are the New Orleans Saints the worst team in the NFC?

Technically the Bears hold that position. I think it's Bad Karma coming back to haunt them. Team has no soul due to cuts. Pierre's gone. Sproles. Bush many others. Hey, at least within my lifetime, we won a superbowl.

Eagles may be worse than the Saints. That offense is bad.

No O. No D. Can't kick field goals. Yuk!

Payton had a good run... Loomis has absolutely crippled this team with horrible contracts. Time to move on. At this point, yes we're just about the worst team in the NFC.

So in 2014 everyone hammered the defense although we had a bunch of young guys with no real leadership from a veteran presence. However, in 2014 when all was hammering the defense I wasn't as much. I did see the offense struggling in a major way. A lot of people were defending the offense because it was so easy to point out the flaws of the defense. It was easy to throw out stats that would suggest otherwise. BUT IF YOU WATCH FOOTBALL AND/OR KNOW THE GAME you wouldn't deny that the offense wasn't doing much better as well. We got rid of some major offensive weapons. So in the off season to get rid of your best TE (no. 2 in the nfl) and in my opinion an up coming receiver K Stills I knew we were going to struggle even more on offense. Although a lot of people think that Drew is a god I felt that he has no offense threats. No one that would cause match up problems for opposing defenses. Now with the defense vastly improving, our offense is looking like they did towards the end of 2013, definitely looks like they did in 2014. Everyone said I sound like a broken record. No one saw the train wreck that was ahead. Now its apparent in 2 games into this year the very things I said last year, and during this off season has come to light (go figure). Two years in a row I preached this. However, its only 2 games into the season I feel they were very competitive against the cards which I felt was a season determining game. Yesterday we played very flat. However, I do feel its still early in the season, we will win games but not much to say play off caliber. I predict we will go 7-9 and miss the playoffs. I hope I'm wrong but with no notable stand outs on our offense, especially in the wide receiving and TE positions its hard not to think otherwise.

Well, just want to point out that Jimmy Graham only has 7 receptions this year and Kenny Stills only has 3. Don't think they are the reason we suck right now. A declining Evans and Strief and young Lelito, Armstead and new center Unger gives you a struggling OL which in turns puts too much pressure on Brees. The run blocking is terrible and any DE with speed gets around Strief. Fix the OL and you have a much better Saints team.

Re: Are the New Orleans Saints the worst team in the NFC?

Good grief, this again?

No one, and I mean no one thought the offense didn't have issues last year.
Remember Brees being called out for his ridiculous int's?

All of the calls for a better interior line? Evans and Goodwin were being criticized weekly.

Colston being called over the hill for his drops and fumbles?

The Ingram and Cadet bashing?

The "forcing" of throws to Graham?

The fans constantly wanting to run the ball more?

Everyone could see the Offense had issues, but most everyone knew the defense was even worse. Its why we have so many new faces on defense.

We have 25 new players on this team, the vast majority play defense for us.

Our defense last year was one of the worst in NFL history, and we addressed it heavily in the off-season, as we should have. I think over half of our defense wasn't here last year.

Not sure I can say ample amount of time? Drew was heavily pressured and abused most of the game I was watching. I do agree with no one was getting open though.

Yes, this is serious issue because Peat isn't any better at this moment.

I don't do bests or worsts. However we sure ain't good. We look like a team that will not put up touchdowns, our special teams are poor, and our defense looks like they will keep the opposition on the firld at any time.

Re: Are the New Orleans Saints the worst team in the NFC?

This is what happens when you pay big contracts to aging vets and create little flexibility to sign new players while drafting poorly.

It will take a couple of years to fix the team and by that time Brees will be gone. How quickly the Saints can get to the top will depend on how well they draft over the next two seasons and if they can find a QB to replace Drew.

Re: Are the New Orleans Saints the worst team in the NFC?

I was really thinking Josh Hill would be more involved in this offense by now.

I do think that we're going to see a much improved team when we get Spiller, Ellerbe (?) and K. Lewis back.

I'll tell you one thing tho...we either need another receiver or our young ones need to step it up.
