Drew Brees harried by Bucs as Zach Strief struggles, pass protection breaks down
1 Attachment(s)
It would be understandable if New Orleans Saints right tackle Zach Strief snatched up every iPad or Surface Pro floating around the team's practice facility, hacked into servers or simply went old school with VCRs to tape over on any game film that remained from the Week 2 loss against Tampa Bay.
The pass protection that served Drew Brees well in the Week 1 loss at Arizona badly faltered last Sunday. As a result of the harassment, Brees was left battered and bruised. Faces across the team and its fan base must be turning blue and purple while holding their collective breath to see if Brees can return from a reportedly bruised rotator cuff in his right throwing shoulder in a timely manner. Sean Payton said the pass protection needs to improve, regardless of who is under center -- Brees, Luke McCown or rookie Garrett Grayson. http://imgick.nola.com/home/nola-med...88045b50c7.JPG Watch this video clip here Watch yet another video clip here read more |

Can Peat do any worse at RT?

It was bad coaching during the game IMHO. After the first pressure on Striefs side they should have helped him. There are a lot of different way to do that without really taking anything away from the offence. |

Having a TE or RB chip the DE might have helped Strief some.

Yes that would have helped a whole lot. But also you can see that interior pressure was a problem. No real pocket for Brees to step up in. On the first sack Strief takes his guy 10 yards upfield which always should be plenty.
McCoy is a beast, one of the best interior D-line players in the league, it is not surprising that he creates problems in the middle. On his sack you can see Unger moving to the left to help Lelito which is good since his own guy is droping into coverage. the prolem however is that Unger flips his hips open, no longer keeping them parallel to the line of scrimmage, this enables McCoy to just run trough the block for the sack. |

Saw a lot of similarities in the Colts game last night. However the Colts O-line is worse than the Saints.

you hit the nail on the head Crusader
Zach is the easy call but the interior of the line had issues. mainly Tim Lelito. He did little to prove he can make living yet again inside the phone booth. the issue he has seems to be reaction timing. Break down on the left side on the interior is not the best thing to happen when you need to help out your right tackle. Evens had his moments too. Funny Jimmy is sitting in Seattle wonder why they trading for him and Unger wishing he was still in Seattle I am sure. Saints played it cute yet again on the OL with Tim and yet again Drew is taking a pounding. The bad news our backups look to be no answer at all at OG. We will see what time gives us with Tim. Not like we have much choice in the matter Zach is a bit long in the tooth and the saints picked a project in the first. Pray practice is going very well and maybe he can help out before Drew gets killed. Most people saw this issue coming back a few years ago. Some times I really wonder WTH is going on with all the cute and puzzling moves over the past few years. Poor drafts kill your quality of depth on the bench. |

Re: Drew Brees harried by Bucs as Zach Strief struggles, pass protection breaks down
I think we need a regime change starting with Loomis.

Let the big guy run block. 6'7 325 isn't meant to dance.

Re: Drew Brees harried by Bucs as Zach Strief struggles, pass protection breaks down
It all starts with the FIVE guys up front.

Re: Drew Brees harried by Bucs as Zach Strief struggles, pass protection breaks down
I think that our O-linemen were in such a big a hurry to get up field that they did a poor job on their initial assignment. We need to solidify the tight five(rugby term) better and worry less about down field blocking while blocking better at the line of scrimmage.
I believe we try to get linemen downfield so quickly because our WR's have no speed and need someone to hide behind. We need more chip blocks from the RB's and TE's before they go out running their route. I realize this slows down the teams ability to get open and there in lies the problem. We are too slow for plays to develop down field and too slow for the separation needed to make things happen right after the snap of the ball. Whether it's a three, five or seven step drop back we don't have the players to find space. |
Re: Drew Brees harried by Bucs as Zach Strief struggles, pass protection breaks down
I never have liked Strief. The pressure Brees saw from the right side is typical of Zach and something I've complained about on these boards for years. He is just as overrated as Bushrod was in New Orleans. Brees pocket presence over the years saved him from plenty of instances were Strief got beat off the line. He is no John Stinchcomb or Jamal Brown. The days of Brown, Nicks, Goodwin, Evans, and Stinchcomb are long gone.

Its now 2015 in case you haven't noticed. Lmao He was a very good RT for several years. Age looks to have caught up with him but its only 2 games. So if Brees starts to suck at age 40, are you gonna call out everyone who claimed Brees was elite from 2006 thru 2013? Lmao. |
