It’s Time For Drew Brees And The Saints To Break Up

When Nate Silver says it...

It

Any excuse seems to be a good reason. "Dog ate my homework - trade Drew", "Grandmother in hospital - trade Drew", "Staying home Saturday night to wash my hair - trade Drew", and/ or, "It's not you, it's me - trade Drew".

Unfortunately he makes numerous painful points.

As Chris stated last week, this is what the end of an era looks like.

But the average looks better than it otherwise would be because of a series of teams that had a stud quarterback in the prime of his career. Dan Marino’s Dolphins, John Elway’s Broncos, Donovan McNabb’s Eagles and Ben Roethlisberger’s Steelers each endured a rough patch. But those QBs were between 26 and 31 when the slump began, leaving their teams with plenty of time to adjust around them.

Brees, by contrast, was 35 when the Saints’ Elo streak was broken last season. Past teams like the 1974 Chiefs, 1978 Vikings and 1986 Cowboys that held on to their aging QBs a year or so too long (sometimes through intermittent injuries) took longer to recover — and it was only once a new quarterback replaced the veteran that they did.

with a replacement-level QB, they’d be 59-87 instead, according to this method. And the last few years would have been especially awful: The Saints would have gone 3-13 in 2012, 6-10 in 2013 and 4-12 in 2014 with Mark Sanchez or Brandon Weeden or some other replacement-level QB at the helm.

Or … maybe not, since the Saints would have had a lot more money to invest elsewhere in the roster. Brees’s contract counts for $26.4 million against the salary cap this year, making it the biggest cap hit in the league. Because the top NFL quarterbacks are probably underpaid relative to the disproportionate value they can provide to their clubs, that’s not even all that terrible a contract so long as Brees is among the top half-dozen quarterbacks in the league — as he was until this season. But the minute Brees gets hurt, or reverts to league average (or worse) because of age, the Saints are left with a rotting carcass of a roster and a salary cap crisis.

These NFL teams have generally recognized that it’s better to break up with an aging quarterback a year too early than a year too late. And almost none of those decisions look bad in retrospect.8 Brees may still have something left — quite possibly enough to lead another franchise somewhere to a deep playoff run — but it’s probably time for he and the Saints to move on from each other.

Makes me kinda sad really.:(

If this is the case ten start talking to Drew and his agent and see what teams might want to do a trade and sign deal since he is going into the last year of the contract.

Do not pull an Archie on Drew.

Well Brees could have pulled a Tom Brady and restructured. What a concept for the team, right?

I can say this, that this might conceivably be better for Drew, and I like him a lot, but he might be better off....and that's a statement divorced completely from my lifelong fandom of the Saints. I kinda do think that Drew might benefit from a change of scenery, a change of environment. That's a different idea than what's good for the Saints, or what I want, of course. But it's possible.

Of course I want him to stay here, and win, but...ask yourself this -- does this organization really deserve Drew, anymore? Is the rest of the club and staff, up to the standards he's set for himself his whole life? Is it a case where maybe the young master student has finally outgrown or lost connection with the teacher (Payton)?

I could easily see Drew moving on and taking a sleeper rebuilding team to the playoffs, maybe it would be the Bills, Jets, maybe even the Vikings (I know nothing about their salary cap situation up there in MN).

But with the right situation, I feel like he could do it again, just like he rejuvenated us here in '06, and he energized the Chargers in 2004. Led them to 12-4. That's not happening here anytime soon given the current circumstances.

26 million is a lot of reasons to part ways!!!

I think we'd be better off using a lot of that money on building our Oline and Dline.

Wow. These are dark days. I guess inevitable but, still dark.

But we've known this day was coming since 2006. We knew it would get here. We just all hoped that it wouldn't be so soon. Personally, I hope Brees retires a Saint. I just don't think I could stand to see Drew across the line from us. To me it's just unthinkable. Hopefully he'll restructure and retire a Saint.

Thing is, I don't trust our front office. We will not spend that extra money wisely. So yeah, let him retire a Saint. Don't cut or trade him.

I don't think he gets traded, but it would probably be best for him. We are 0-3, and last season we were 7-9 but really should have been 6-10. that's bad bad. like really bad. we are a bad team. we have a lot of young guys, and some really good players to build around.

He did manage to knock up his wife more than Brady. That's the only thing he has over Brady.

Ok trade Drew then what?, Luke Mccown until Grayson is ready or force Grayson now when he's clearly not ready and still struggle the same if not worse every team idc who starts UP FRONT on BOTH sides of the ball it's starts with O & D line and ours are subpar period we have invest up front for a change not a band-aid but a real solution it's not Drews fault he got the contract that's what they AGREED To live with it it takes 2 to tango front office might be the bigger issue not Drew

Well I always said that I am a Saint fan, never a player fan. I want what is best for the team.
Hey.....but one good thing is that we don't have to worry about Drew playing for someone in our division

Just curious who do you think is really good. Because I don't see anyone now who is really good. Not saying that a few might be in time. But for now I don't see anyone who is really good
