It's Time to End the Trade Brees Talk

Brees will not nor can he be traded this season. Let's end the talk of it now.

Here are the reasons he won't be.

1. He's hurt. Let that sink in. He's injured. Until he plays a game and shows teams he can throw the ball with the same accuracy, zip, and quick release he is known for, no one is giving up anything for him. Teams are not going to give value for an injured player.

Sure teams like Pittsburgh and Dallas could use a QB to replace their injurd starters, but guess what Brees has in common with Romo? That's right, neither is healthy.

2. Only teams with no long term options can or would offer anything of value. Let's assume Brees's shoulder heals and he's healthy enough to play by week five. Would Dallas trade for him? The answer is still no. They expect their QB1 back by week 11 (6 games from now.) They cannot afford both players, so while they might take a flyer- they wouldn't give multiple high round picks. Neither would the Steelers. So, the teams you could shop him to are teams without a QB signed to a big deal- and the problem with those teams is they may be in the same boat as the Saints.

3. His contract makes trading him nearly impossible. Brees's salary is 20 million for this season. That means any team trading for him would have to assume the remaining portion of that as a cap hit. NFL rules, unlike MLB, prohibit teams from picking up a portion of it. So, if Brees were traded after week 4, the receiving team would pick up 15 million cap hit. The teams with 15 million in cap space are Oakland, Cleveland, Tennessee, and Jacksonville. Wait until week 6 and you could add Tampa to that list. There isn't practically a team who could absorb the hit prior to the trading deadline.

4. The best value the Saints could get would be a mid round pick.

Even if a team could restructure to fit him, and it would be difficult, his age and contract would decrease what a team would pay. Think a fourth or fifth round pick..and maybe only one. Teams will pay a premium in picks and money for a young stud player, and aging players they might pay one or the other, but not both. Since acquiring Brees is already a premium in dollars, the picks would not be there. In addition, his age and injury concerns further complicate things.

Brees will finish this season with the Saints.

Stop the trade talk. It ain't gonna happen.

But, if everyone is morally open to it, we could be the 1st football team in history to trade our players in pieces ?

I mean think about it..... We would make billions, and being cut from the team brings on a whole new level.
I think we would see WAY more effort on the field and during games. 😄

Who wouldnt want Bree's Heart... I mean literally that could go for $100 millions easy.

I have not read anything about Brees being traded this year. I have saw where people want him traded after the season. That also will not happen. No one will pick him up for a 1 year 27 million contract. Our only bet is to keep him or out right release him. I love seeing Drew in N.O. but I think it's time for him to go. Payton has destroyed the last 2 seasons and any chance Drew or the Saints could win a Championship anytime soon. I say next year drop him and Payton. Send Evans, Colston and byrd home also.

Send SP down the road, offer Brees the HC position.

Not so sure about that one, a team who is that one position from being a contender would without hesitation (providing Brees returns to pre-injury caliber).
Any talk of Brees being traded during the season is just ridiculous, if it even exists. Now, next year is a more feasible reality, but I don't see it actually happening then either, but what do I know.

Somebody needs to post that guy from Austin Powers demanding "One Million Dollars" that's what this thread needs. Just one picture? Anyone? Bueller?

I don’t want it to happen but it could. Assuming he heals by seasons end…

There are always sign and trade deals to work around the cap issues.
A team may have all the ingredients for a run except a QB like Brees. Buffalo and Houston come to mind right away.
Brees has about 2 or 3 years left, which may be attractive for a team that needs a SB QB for 2 or 3 seasons.

My hope is that he stays here, we address the few holes we have and make a run at it.

Lets face it, if we have a chance it is with Brees. I can't see him staying after next year for sure. A 27 million bill next year will be hard to swallow if they don't have the money to upgrade WR/TE/CB/OL/DL/S/RB. The good news is we seem to be set at Special teams!

He probably won't play at 27 million.

We don't need upgrades at all the positions you listed, just WR, DL and TE mostly.

With Williams returning next year we look pretty good at CB with Lewis Breaux, Swann and Williams.

We're fine at RB, S and OL for now. Those aren't glaring holes at all.

Brees isn't going anywhere. He'll sign an extension next year to spread out the remaining money over 3 years which is what is left in his career barring significant injury. I was just having fun with it yesterday saying Brees for Watt because we know it would never happen.

I agree that we are ok with most positions, I was just trying to be funny. I don't agree with you about O-line though. Evans and Strief are playing like 90 yr old men this year. They need to go and we need to upgrade those positions. Safety is one of those positions that would be good if everyone was healthy. The problem is, none of them are healthy.

O-line is as critical as NT to me. Both are essential to our success.

1. DLine - no pressure
2. OLine - 3/5 of it needs to be replaced
3. WR - no seperation, to many dropped passes

That's exactly how I feel. We have to quit offering all this big money to people, trading or cutting them and then eating the cap money.
