New Orleans Saints CB Brandon Browner a big disappointment so far

New Orleans Saints CB Brandon Browner a big disappointment so far, NFL.com writes | NOLA.com

Not that this was news to us, as fans. But being ranked dead last among 104 CBs by PFF, that's saying something for our "big" free agent

My word.

There is bad, then there is:
Brandon Kemar Browner #39 CB of the New Orleans Saints

Browner can only be used as a jam corner with safety help. He has never been a good coverage guy but one who jams receivers on the line to throw off timing. I think a healthy Byrd will help with Browner. Could be a great setup with opposing QB's looking to pick on Browner and have a ball hawking Byrd come in for a pick. Providing Byrd stays healthy.

Should be transitioned to a SS role. Vaccaro has proven to be no more than role player and lacks the ability to play every down as a safety. I think Browner would be a natural fit at safety. What I don't get is why they moved Swann to safety for portions of the game, clearly they know Vaccaro can't get the job done but taking Swann out of a position that he was performing well doesn't make sense. The answer seems obvious in this situation.

In other PFF news, Delvin Breaux is ranked #19 in QBR (thats good).

Also he's ranked 3rd in the coverage snaps per reception (the snaps a CB is primary man in coverage relative to how many receptions allowed), only behind Patrick Peterson and Desmond Trufant. (thats great)

I like the physical aspect of what he does, just needs support and a DL that can get inside from time to time. Without that teams will continue to expose him. He's being tasked to do something he is not good at so yeah, results will suck.

This ^^^^^^^^^^^. BB is way more effective when he has help over the top. The dude can play when he is near the line of scrimmage. Go back and look at the replay in Dallas .. had some serious tackles near the line.

Message to the Big Lebowski ... gotta play him to his strengths. His game isn't like P Peterson or D Revis.

Swann and Breaux are already miles ahead of him, I don't understand why he's even still allowed on the field for our defense.

"Square-Peg/Round-Hole" Syndrome. Can't hammer a steel nail with a wet noodle.

Draft & grow your own dang corners that learn from NFL-caliber secondary coaches.

we knew what we were getting when we signed him. So far he has lived up to his billing

I blame Rob and injuries for the miss use of Browner. So lets see what happens when Lewis is at full speed and can play a full game. Byrd over the top has to help.

Still have a CB/S or two high on my wish list in next years draft just like I do every year since Jenkins and Harper were cut lose. I just do not the marriage of Kenny and Byrd back there. Jenkins would have been a better match with Byrd

Jason David was bad.....but he led our team in interceptions with 6 in 2008 lol

I would have liked to have seen Sunseri with Byrd. Vaccarro don't look good to me at all. I would love to see a good SS back their on patrol.

Its also why I don't think he'd make a good Safety at all.

His skill is man coverage, playing the WR, not any type of zone where he's required to see the whole field.

I don't think his skillset transfers to safety at all.

Why does everyone keep saying when Byrd gets back this, and when Byrd gets back that. What has the dude done in two years to instill this level of confidence? I am not being a *****, I am being serious. I just don't see anything he has done to make us feel so good.

Obviously its his all-pro performances year in and year out before he came here that instills that level of confidence.

JB is damaged goods and BB is a penalty machine.......................both of these careers are declining

Sad part about that is its the only place teams would throw at. For every INT it seemed like he gave up 3 TDS. I cant wait to get Lewis back healthy this year though. That will help our D tremendously.

well yes, I understood that the first season he was here, but that **** seems like a lifetime ago

Personally, I feel like the Keenan Lewis injury ruined our start to the season. Browner was forced to be our #1 CB and he can only be effective within an incredibly specific defensive scheme. We were doomed from the get-go. Now we're getting Lewis and Byrd back... But is it too little too late?

You know you're doing bad when even PFF ranks you last. They usually rank players backwards. Then again, if you're rating players backwards maybe they still think he's good. This has been an exercise in futility.

Re: New Orleans Saints CB Brandon Browner a big disappointment so far

Players who have been successful for other teams dont just arbitrarily start t suck like that. He was pretty consistant with Seattle and New England. I think it has to do more with coaching and scheme. Other good coaches were able to get some play out of him so its not like its a lost cause.

Re: New Orleans Saints CB Brandon Browner a big disappointment so far

Oh speaking of Byrd, I didnt see much of him but when I did he was right near the ball or helping out one of the corners. If he statys healthy we might have a player after all.

Re: New Orleans Saints CB Brandon Browner a big disappointment so far

Why people think automatically if you play corner you can go to safety? Well maybe they can but seriously doubt browner can. He don't have lateral movement or eye for the ball to be a ballhawk. He is straight up in your face, physical corner that rely on disrupting the timing and re routing wide recievers. He is more suited for zone with help over the top or in the middle to prevent slant. He is not a corner that you can leave on a island unless its goal to goal.

Re: New Orleans Saints CB Brandon Browner a big disappointment so far

Browner's a solid tackler - great for run support.
The problem is that's not his primary responsibility.
He's long and linky - great when you are going for the ball,
but he's never in position to go for the ball.
He can't turn his hips well and doesn't have quick feet.
It's easy to get separation from him and then he's in catch-up mode.
NE and Seattle gave him a pass rush to work with. He didn't have to cover for more than 3 seconds.
Browner and most others would probably be fine IF they weren't hung out on the line.
A pass rush would make all of these guys look MUCH better.

The Dude 10-07-2015 01:51 PM

Re: New Orleans Saints CB Brandon Browner a big disappointment so far

He's just not being used right. He also doesn't have the supporting cast that Seattle or even New England had. It's not like these players just come here and start sucking. Scheme and coaching are as much to blame.

Wraps up when making tackles also. A huge plus in my book.
