METAIRIE, La. -- Rob Ryan was confident, defiant and self-deprecating Tuesday while discussing a New Orleans Saints defense that has plummeted to last in the NFL in yards allowed.

"I know we're on the verge of breaking through," Ryan insisted of a young defense that had its worst day in last Sunday’s 39-17 loss at Philadelphia.

The Saints gave up 519 yards, which was the highest total from any game in the NFL this season at the time, before the San Francisco 49ers topped them later in the night. The Saints have allowed a league-high 409 yards per game, and they’re tied for 29th in the NFL in points allowed at 28.6 per game.

But Ryan continued to express his belief in a defense that had its best performance in a 26-20 victory against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 4 and finally snagged its first two interceptions of the season in the first half at Philadelphia before the wheels came off in the second half.

"I thought (the breakthrough) was gonna be for Dallas week because we were getting our players back," Ryan said of healing veterans Keenan Lewis, Jairus Byrd and Dannell Ellerbe. "And I thought we were heading that way in Philadelphia. I think for whatever reason we didn't finish the task at hand. Stats don't mean anything to us. I know what it looks like. And you can feel it, it's coming. I know it is. And just keep blaming me ... And that'll be great because I know this thing's gonna be great, too.

"Our guys are working enough that I know it's getting turned around, and it will. It will be fixed. It's not great yet obviously. Hell, we're probably last in the league in every single category. ... We plan on getting better, we know who we're playing this week. And it's gonna be a hell of a challenge and our guys will be up for it." Shoulder the blame so the guys don't give up and quit on him.
Step out front and take the beating from the media.
What he needs to do is teach the DB's how to turn back and make a play on the ball.
Teach somebody how to wrap and roll when tackling.
Simplify the puzzle so everybody can see the picture.
It's still 11 on 11.
Did bounty gate outlaw a "Missed tackle" pot too?
How about a "blown coverage" fund for the homeless?
End-zone pass interference costs them double.
Let's see how soon things turn for the better.

Give him time ya'll. He'll either give better results with our healthy players returning and getting back in the groove or he'll help improve our draft status. It's a win/win situation. :razz:

With great yardage given up comes great draft picks. Also firings.

What's disturbing is we are turning into one of those team loaded with #1 picks but get no production. I don't even know how many now but we are getting stacked with them.

Let me tell you what you just read. You just read a man begging for his players to do something...he knows it is absolute **** and garbage and he is hoping that if he strokes them enough they might do something for him. Remember how he had to go in against tampa and give a speech so we could win a game against a team that had the worst record in the league and actually laid down for us

I will admit I was very happy we got him as DC because I wanted us to return to an attacking, dictating offense. The first year seemed to justify my happiness. It has been downhill since and we have done everything he wanted. Spend money on big FA's that were supposed to be the last piece of the puzzle he needed. Spend high draft picks on exactly what he needed. Even trade away valuable assets to get more draft picks to help his side of the ball. And we have gotten progressively worse. He's run out of excuses with me now. I wish I had an answer that would work but I am not the one making 6-7 figures to come up with the solutions.
