Saints Worked Out Defensive Linemen Kevin Vickerson & Matt Shaughnessy
 

Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post reports that the Saints worked out DL Kevin Vickerson, DL Vaughn Martin, DE Matt Shaughnessy and DL Quanterus Smith this week.

Vickerson, 32, signed a one-year contract worth $950,000 with the Jets back in March. However, he wound up being placed on season-ending injured reserve before the start of the season and later released during roster cuts.

In 2014, Vickerson appeared in 15 games for the Chiefs in 2014 and recorded 12 tackles and a pass defense. Pro Football Focus has him down for playing 175 snaps last year to go along with a decent rating as a run-defender.

Smith, 25, is a former fifth-round pick of the Broncos back in 2013 out of Western Kentucky. He was unfortunately cut loose by the Broncos with a failed physical designation days before this year’s NFL Draft.

He has worked out for the Jets, Seahawks, Dolphins and Chiefs in recent weeks, but hasn’t received an offer.

In 2014, Smith appeared in 15 games for the Broncos, but recorded just 11 tackles and two pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 51 defensive end in a 4-3 system out of 59 qualifying players.

Shaughnessy, 28, was in the year of his final two-year, $4.4 million contract when he was among the Cardinals’ final roster a few months ago.

In 2014, Shaughnessy was limited to appearing in just eight games for the Cardinals after he was placed on short-term injured reserve. He finished the year with 17 tackles.

Why not Darnell Dockett and Ray McDonald? Real 3-4 pieces to bolster the defensive line.

It's a little late for that. Isn't it? We could have tried to improve both lines better.

Instead of digging out depth from old washed up vets and injured players, let's hire some drill sergeants to whip this team into shape and get our return on investment! I mean we do have like a billion dollars worth of players on the field and in practice every day. We already spent the money, let's get some effort back!!!


Our team looks so gassed by the end of a game that we don't look like a professional football team anymore. They look weak and out of shape. I'm out of shape but I also don't get paid 50K TO 100K PER WEEK to do my job or SIT BENCH!

I'd rather watch this team play hard, no flags, no drops, no fumbles and LOSE every week then watch us lose with flabby arm defensive linemen, mistakes, errors, int's, hurries, near int's, fumbles, flags, drops, near sacks, partial tackles - it's almost not watchable at times.

Always build the lines first. I'm not a fan of this assortment approach. We can't protect Brees and we can't move the pocket, at all! We are screwed on both fronts. Focus on one and then you can at least win one front. We are losing on both.
