Michael Mauti's father, Rich Mauti, also blocked a punt in a Saints uniform
Michael Mauti is not the only person in his family to block a punt while playing for the New Orleans Saints. His father Rich did the same thing in 1980.
That punt block occurred in Miami, and not inside the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, where Michael Mauti did his best Steve Gleason imitation Thursday with a punt block that resulted in a touchdown against the Atlanta Falcons. The punt block by Michael's father, who played for the Saints from 1977 to 1983, occurred late in the fourth quarter and gave the Saints the ball on the Dolphins 10 with six seconds left. The Saints trailed 21-16 and Archie Manning completed what appeared to be the winning touchdown pass to Ike Harris in the end zone, but the play was waived off by an offensive pass interference penalty, according to a story archived by Google news. Cool story and connection, but...
1980? very bad memories. I was surprised that the story wasn't that he was the upback and Erxleben or Blanchard punted it into his back. |

Considering how rare a blocked punt is in the NFL it freaking awesome that both father and son manages to do it. Father and son in the pretty darn rare too.
