Another Payton mistake. Hocker was behind all camp, even though it was close, and he chose him anyway. Now, Hopkins is lighting it up in Washington, Hocker is gone, and the Saints sign Washington's castoff. Maybe the veteran will come in and get the job done.

accurate kicker but limited range. Will affect game plan (30-35 yds in opponents territory)

Kicked outside in Washington for 3 full years. 87% on that. Rarely attempted outside of 50 yards. Basically, we gotta get inside the 30 before we press the button.

Welcome aboard, but he's about to be exposed to some shady/spotty snaps & holds so he'd best be prepared for that kind of special teams clown-ery.

I thought it would take another game of jackknifing inside the 40 but I guess it's time...I think it goes beyond holding issues. I assume his practices were also not that great.

Not surprised at the move. Hocker is not good -- and Payton knows the wages of being optimistic with non-performing kickers.

If he makes field goals instead of missing them, then he will be an improvement. It just means our offense has to do better at providing better field position for him.

Hate that the kid didn't make it - he's from my area and I had hoped he'd fill the spot for the next 10 years and we could quit with the revolving door.

But can't keep playing wide-left wide-right in the NFL...

I have no qualms about a shorter leg. We shouldn't be hitting too many from past 50, in any case. O has a job to do as well.

He looks soo ~ much older than Hocker. Perhaps pain has aged and toughed him. I hope so :)

I do. Field goals happen when your O, couldn't make it to the end zone. Same thing with the punting game. This explicitly means your O isn't as good. Some years it wasn't so critical for us. This year, IT IS.

Thank God we have Jeff Ireland, I could see Loomis drafting a kicker in the first round next season...because that's what's been wrong with the team all this time...

One of Payton resonsibities as a coach is to keep the better player or players. Hopkins clearly out kicked Hocker in competition. Payton gets to liking people to much(just like the good ole' boys on D) and abuses his power as a head coach. One day that abuse will bite him in the a$$. Making the best decisions for the team should come first.

We had our future in Hopkins but SP like always thought he new better. Never seems to work out for him any more.

SP has always struggled with Kickers must be low on his priority list. Probably should have kept Hopkins instead of Hocker. Seems like we have
a connection with the Redskins trading Kickers.

I feel like with Drew Brees on the roster they should be going for it more in between the opponents 25-50 yard line anyways. Even with our offensive woes we are currently #2 in third down percentage and #2 in fourth down percentage. It feels like Payton has been leaning on the field goal kicker too many times. Knowing it's not there as an option could cause Payton to actually improve the playcalling in the middle of the field. After watching that documentary, I am a big Kevin Kelley disciple, LOL.
