Payton Concerned About Saints Run Game.

Re: Payton Concerned About Saints Run Game.
really? that is a shock. OL beat to heck and no real depth to fill in? worried? i do not get it. 1 yard and a cloud of dust is our moto.
look no one fears our WR and TE so 8 in the box it is. Stop the run against a patch worked OL is simple as pie in defensive game planning. Run defense? whats that? DL gets pushed all over the field so gap assignments is shot to ...... I feel for the LB when it comes to filling a moving hole that is jumping all over the place. Saints are building a pass rush first or at least that appears to be what they are trying to do. IMO that is totally backwards. I thought it was stop the run first. I must be nuts what the heck cut whats left of any players that have played for us in the front 7. continuity is and has been out the window for a while. load up with rookies and UDFA, that always works, for the cap that is. never mind wait for 2017 ..... wait for 2017 ..... wait for 2017 ..... |
Re: Payton Concerned About Saints Run Game.
Look's like the lights are slowly coming back on in Coach Payton's head.

Just his way of saying he's getting tired of Rob Ryan.

Robinson will try to take it to the outside but we most likely won't be able to set an edge. Spiller..who knows? I would start out by giving the Ball to Ingram 25 times per game. Really see what he could do with it when given the chance. I think he need to pound it a lot to finally open holes and burst longer runs. |
Re: Payton Concerned About Saints Run Game.
There is one thing about the running game that a lot of people here have commented on, and when you view the play-by-play of the games (like when they're listed in a box score) it is REALLY very apparent. So many times, the play-by-play will be like, first Ingram runs for a good gain, like maybe 7 or 10 yards. Then the next running play, Robinson gets 1 yard. OR vice versa -- Robinson gets a big huge chunk, then Ingram comes in a couple of plays later and gets nothing. The switching around of the backs (and the lack of momentum it creates) is REALLY noticeable when you go back and look at the play-by-plays in the box scores in the games this year. Anytime somebody gets a hot hand and breaks a big gain, the next back usually gets almost nothing or a loss.
It's getting so I'm starting to dread the whole thing on offense where after a play, there's the big long pause, and then you see five or six guys come out and five or six new guys go in, after EVERY play. It kills the momentum and lets the defense adjust to whatever they see. I don't know if anybody else saw this at the game, but the Falcons had assistant coaches who were watching the Saints substitutions. And they would have 3 or 4 defensive guys standing around ready to go in (a lot of times these guys not even on the chalk on the sidelines, several times they were actually out on the field, almost by the numbers, waiting to run into the field). And they would watch who the Saints sent in on offense, and then run their defensive personel out onto the field to match. Probably 19 plays out of every 20, the Falcons waited and sent in their defense AFTER the Saints had their offense already in the huddle, and they'd seen who was in the game. If that doesn't tell you the Saints playcalling is too obvious, I don't know what will. |

We need to get rid of the zone blocking scheme. Then we need to start running out of less predictable formations. It's that simple. The zone blocking scheme has been a complete failure. |
Re: Payton Concerned About Saints Run Game.
Predictable Formations. You said it. Try running from spread offense at least occaisionally. Love the screens but a draw also works sometimes. Complicated offense... Well, many formations but each practically predictable especially the run.

Re: Payton Concerned About Saints Run Game.
Hurray. Payton was woken up from a 5 year play-calling nap.
Signs of life last week with the rollouts, quick passes, and PA's. This week apparently we will not be running Ingram on a dive play on EVERY first down. Great comments/observations on this thread so far. Time for SP to start sifting thru our suggestion box. |
Re: Payton Concerned About Saints Run Game.
Why do you think Ingram is doing so well in the passing game? Been saying this for 3 years, when Ingram is in the game defenses know 90% of the time it's a run up the gut. Switch it up a bit and run out of the spread, dump off more passes to Ingram and maybe on occasion toss it wide to him. Until we have road grading guards again like Evans and Nicks were in their prime, running between the tackles won't net us much.

Re: Payton Concerned About Saints Run Game.
Oh hell you never know. Payton could be just trying to lure Indy into thinking we're going to run the ball more. Who knows with him.
I definitely agree that our run defense and offense needs heavy improvement. Especially that run D. Ick...we can't stop anyone. Oh well...at least we got to the QB last game and the DB's looked much better. That's improvement. Maybe the d-line can get a little more push and we can get to the ball carrier better this game. Maybe we're on the verge of a breakthrough defense! Or maybe not...who knows. |

I'm concerned too.

Re: Payton Concerned About Saints Run Game.
I miss the scripted opening drive that plays out like 1:30 left in the game and no time outs.
I miss the dead-run-post-pattern for a 30-yard gain. I enjoy Ingram once he's beyond the line of scrimmage, and would like to see him get there somehow other than between the tackles... and on first down each and every series. I enjoy Drew on a dead run, and would like to see more of that because it is so uncharacteristic. ... Anything uncharacteristic of the predictable three and out of lately. |
Re: Payton Concerned About Saints Run Game.
He hired RR, why would he hint around about that? If he doesn't succeed it will be 0 - 2 since Greg Williams. Oh wait, he's really saying "In Spags he trusts!"

Re: Payton Concerned About Saints Run Game.
Simple Solution - Declare Mark Ingram has a Groin Injury, Sit Him...
Run Khiry Robinson and/or C.J. Spiller for a couple of games... If you have more success, trade Ingram to the G'nats or dem' Cowboys for a King's Ransom... If you still suck, get off Ingram's arse (though I think he goes down to easy on the first contact), and sign/draft some road graders... |

Re: Payton Concerned About Saints Run Game.
Both lines need help. Maybe this draft I can get a stud NT to plug that hole we call a middle. I wouldn't mind a big thumper type ILB and another OLB that contains well like Kiki (I love that guy). On the O it's not hard to see G, and T (I give Strief this year before letting off some) and Evans needs to be replaced. But we need depth to go with those O-line positions also. Payton should be looking at a big body WR also. We have waisted way to many picks and need a great draft this go around to be able to be scary good again.

Re: Payton Concerned About Saints Run Game.
I can tell you how to fix that run game coach.
1. Sit Ingram 2. Start Robinson 3. Spell Robinson with spiller There you have it, oh, did I mention SIT INGRAM!!?? |

Re: Payton Concerned About Saints Run Game.
Payton is concerned?
Saints are 8th in the NFL Passing on First Downs (63.83%)... The last game we were (55.56%) Passing on First Downs - And We Won That Game... I'd be more concerned with Passing too much coming out the gate... Let's let our guys soften up those pass rushers just a tad... Source: https://www.teamrankings.com/nfl/stat/passing-play-pct |
