Lets talk about Colston

Yes, he did make a big catch to seal the win for us, but he was also part of the reason we were in this rut to begin with. The interception by Davis came on a throw to Colston.

Colston will have his moments but with them will become blunders. And with the oline the way it is, Brees cannot afford to be relying too much on Colston. It appears Brees is gonna throw to who he likes unless Payton intervenes.

When the game was on the line, Marques Colston came through for us today.

Is he in decline, at his age, health?!? Of course he is and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out...

If anything, while Colston is still on the field, Brees has got to get Colston the ball more - so he doesn't fall asleep!!!

Drew may be having 'Jimmy Withdrawals' and is just going to have to shake off any bad lackadaisical effort habits in his read progressions he had when Graham was still a Saint...

Only good things happen when Colston is making catches and securing intermediate gains...

Re: Lets talk about Colston

Brees didn't exactly light the game up himself

Sure Colston should have tried to locate the ball and he's been having a tough season so far, but Brees was the one who just lofted a gift wrapped Interception right to the colts defender.

Brees also missed quite a lot of open throws, he had cooks running free quite a few times and the ball completely sailed.

Overall decent win, lets get back to .500 next week.

Yeah he was definitely off. There was a nice ball about 35 yards down the field in the first half where Brees made a throw over a couple of defenders, to Cooks, and it went off his finger tips when he made no effort to dive. That kind of thing isn't on Brees, but as you said he missed Cooks several times, and I just thought he settled on way too many underneath throws in the second half.

The protection broke down at times, but Drew just looked like he had made up his mind he was just gonna check it down on most of those plays. The other problem is we completely stopped run blocking down the stretch.

As for Colston... I can't say anything different about him than I've been saying for a couple years. The one catch was nice, but when we're in the position of patting a guy on the back as if he's done some heroic thing, after one whole catch, that tells you everything. I'm glad he made the catch, but he remains a liability.

Maybe more targets help. Cooks needs to get off the end, he is no wideout!! Where was Snead today? And Watson?

And I also saw him hit Cooks deep on the run that bounced out of Cooks hands..... let's be fair.

Re: Lets talk about Colston

we dont have the targets we used to. Brees still has to gel with these new receivers. Cooks draws a lot of coverage so alot of times that is out and other than Colston nobody else was as sure of a thing as we used to have.
Our receivers were never great. The thing about our receivers were they were all talented all around but all excelled in different ways to be used. You had Devery as the burner, Lance as possetion, Colston the tall one, Shockey or Graham to get the tough ones. Our receivers now dont compliment each other as well as in the past.
It will get worked out eventually. Probably not this year though.

You saw the same one I was talking about. That was a weak effort by Cooks on that one.

Cooks should watch Stefon Diggs TD for Minestota and learn something about effort and toughnes.

I'd like to see him more agressive in those situations.

Oh yeah I agree with you there, Cooks should have had that and Brees made that throw perfectly.
However there were plenty of other throws that completely sailed on him, I remember one where Brees escaped the pocket and rolled to his right with Cooks completely uncovered and Brees overshot him by a mile.

It wasn't perfect but a win is a win and I'm happy for that considering how the season started.
Hopefully this has made the players realise that they can't sit back with a 20 point lead and the entire second half to play.

I'd like to see that aswell. He has lots of speed and athleticism, but he needs to make the tough catches, too. Something I don't see a lot from him.

He is like small version of Jimmy Graham. If throw isn't perfect he won't make that extra effort. It's frustrating because he has all the talent in the world.

Drew has always thrown to "who he likes".

They all count. He has dropped just as many of those as he has caught in recent years ... Hard to call it classic Colston. Something wrong with pointing out the obvious?

This team has no where to go but up. You can see improvements on both sides of the ball. I don't know where this team will be at the end of the year, whether playoffs are a possibility or not... but the future isn't bad.

Burn that's true, all catches count just as all money counts...

But some bills are worth more than others and Colston was money at the end of the game...

He did make the catch at the end, THIS TIME. And that's good, no argument there. But he dropped about three passes on the final drive against Carolina, and hasn't been called on in late game situations much before or since then because of his inability to catch with anything close to consistency.

That was my point in an earlier post, that it's sad when the guy finally makes one play and he's hailed for his late game heroics, and "wow what a warrior" type of thing. If it were just about anyone else people wouldn't say much other than "hey, nice catch". But with Colston it stands out because we're used to him dropping it now.

I hope our scouts are studying the WR's that will be coming out in the draft. We need Colstons' replacement. No. Coleman doesn't look to be the answer either.

Is there actually stats for passes dropped?
