Lions fire offensive coordinator, promote QB coach Jim Bob Cooter

The Lions have decided to make some changes to their coaching staff after getting off to a 1-6 start. The team announced on Monday that offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi has been fired.

The Lions also dumped offensive line coach Jeremiah Washburn and assistant offensive line coach Terry Heffernan.

Lombardi, who's the grandson of former Packers coach Vince Lombardi, will be replaced by Lions quarterbacks coach Jim Bob Cooter. Washburn's job as offensive line coach will be filled by tight ends coach Ron Prince...

I thought it was pretty funny when they hired Lombardi as their offensive coordinator. There was nothing to suggest he was ready to run an offense.

But reading that his replacement's name is Jim Bob Cooter might be the most hilarious thing I've seen in a long, long time.

They made a scapegoat outta' the wrong guy, IMO, not that he was tearing up the league with his play calling, and they missed hatcheting a coupla' more, but that may be for the end of the season, :neutral:. Meh, maybe it'll give the team a sugar spike like it did in Miami ... was gonna' pick KC to beat DET in London this week, but now gotta' factor that crap in, :neutral:.

I don't think it was his fault, hence the 'scapegoat' opinion. The O/Line is not without talent. Caldwell tends to micro-manage and there was some issue with Lombardi being required on the sidelines vs up in the booth. The only game he was allowed up in the booth, to my knowledge, was the win over Chicago where the offense did have a pretty good day, #shrug.

It is what it is and I'm pretty sure it's the usual poor decision that will somehow bite them in the ass. Just another day at the office for the Detroit Lions, I'm afraid. :neutral:.
