The Saints tried everything to give the defense a stronger foundation without rocking the one it was built upon.

They brought in new players, introduced a new scheme and added positions to the coaching staff. The playbook was stripped down and the bad elements were shipped out. But in the end, there was no amount of tweaking or renovating that could cover up the issue at the core of it all: Rob Ryan was not getting the job done.

So, New Orleans made the decision to let go of the defensive coordinator and will move forward in a new direction. Two sources reportedly told Fox Sports Monday that the Saints will fire Ryan after the latest defensive performance Sunday.

The move can hardly be painted as rash or reactionary. In fact, some will say the move should have been made at the end of last season. But the Saints were of the state of mind that the issues that plagued the 2014 season were more related to having the wrong personnel and a defense that was too complex for the players.

Not all his fault. Other than Darren Sharper under Gregg Williams, D has been hit and miss - and he really only made a difference in 2009.

2011 D killed us in San Fran.

2012 under Spags was terrible.

I think the pattern here points to talent (or lack thereof).


All that being said - the message is lost - Rob needs to go.
