10 biggest NFL free agent busts of 2015 season

Saints made the list twice!

Brandon Browner, CB, New Orleans Saints

There haven’t been many players in the NFL — at any position — whose trashy play can compare with the odorous putrescence that emanates from Browner on a weekly basis. Let’s just put it this way, he’s making Byron Maxwell look downright serviceable.

As the “lead dog” of New Orleans’ vapid secondary, Browner is allowing opposing receivers to catch 67.3 percent of passes, has allowed 15.6 yards per catch, has racked up a league-high 16 penalties and has only gotten his hands on five passes (one interception) in 55 attempted passes to his man. For all this, Pro Football Focus has him as the worst corner in the NFL in their rankings.

He’s also been a poor leader who hasn’t comported himself with much professionalism.

The only consolation that can be proffered to the Saints is that Browner at least wasn’t one of the highest-paid free agents this past offseason. Still, after the Saints gave him $7.75 million guaranteed, his production (or lack thereof) can only be viewed as a tremendous disappointment.

************************************************************

C.J. Spiller, RB, New Orleans Saints

If Sean Payton cannot find a big role for Spiller, then it’s time to admit there is no hope left.

This is a guy who was once thought to be one of the league’s most dynamic playmakers, but injuries and terrible coaching in Buffalo put a damper on his ability to make a lasting impact. He’s been healthy this year but still hasn’t found a way into the heart of the New Orleans offense. This is a fact that irks the running back, who doesn’t understand why he’s not being featured.

“I go in when I’m told to go in. There’s nothing I can change,” Spiller said (h/t Mike Triplett of ESPN.com). “I know what I can present to this league. So it’s the same questions, [but] there’s no different answer. That’d be something, I guess for upstairs to answer, not me.”

To this point in the season, Spiller has totaled 318 yards and two touchdowns. He hasn’t looked explosive as a runner but is still an effective receiver. However, nobody should expect him to ever be a featured back in the NFL, and he’s quickly going the way of Reggie Bush in this regard.

To this point, it’s clear the Saints overpaid by a long shot by giving him $9 million guaranteed on a four-year, $16 million deal.

How can you be a bust when "The Coach" won't play you?

Ingram is our #1. Spiller is the change of pace back. Our coach can't stand to leave him in for more than 2 plays but in that defense, he hasn't done much with his opportunities when given the ball more.

All of these mentioned players are a prime example of why the Saints are not a good team. The Saints organization used to stay out of the big name free agent market and go for 2nd tier type of guys. I get some of the shift in philosophy has to do with lots of bad drafting over the years, but they seriously need to circle back to what worked and stay away from big money free agents.

Very good points.

The Bobby McCray, Jeremy Shockey and Jabari Greer type moves were the ones that won us a Superbowl.

They were not a great D but they at least got their assignments right and were able to produce alot of turnovers which made them at least respected. These units we have put together since then are just not that good and instead of getting better have gotten worst.

During the offseason we fired our college scouting head honcho. We need to find a new pro scout as well.

The problem is we don't have a consistent definitive plan for drafting. We're a 3-4 defense.....no wait we're a 4-3 defense.....no wait we're a 5-2.......

We need to review and rewrite our mission statement and stick to it for longer than Sean's attention span.

Can't argue with that. Got to have an identity, we don't. Square pegs in round holes seems to be our moto.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - Loomis has been trying to build the team through FA and has been failing miserably at it, along w faiiling miserably at the Draft. He prides himself in finding "diamonds in the rough", which he did when he brought us an injured Drew Brees, Marques Colston, and Jimmy Graham. But a good GM can't build a consistently good team year after year without being successful at making good high round draft picks, and that's where Loomis has failed. That's why we are a sub .500 team and no longer considered a contender.

We don't do anything well, on either side of the ball.
The contract juggling act has finally fallen apart with nothing to show for it.
I say - back to basics.
Figure out what we/they want to do and be about it.
3-5 year plan to solidify both sides of the ball without going broke.
$135 million or so each year to field a team of 54 and NOT have 5-7 bust the cap.
There has got to be "some" quality at a decent price out here.
We are watching other teams do it.
Individual greatness is not what I'm looking for.
I'm talking about individuals doing their job and the team becomes great.

Starts up front...

We've got an overpaid, former All-Pro who's played like he's had one foot out the door two seasons ago...

Granted Ireland engineered a deft trade and won the trade with the S'Hawks and got us a great Center, but...

Why didn't we finish rebuilding the line and sign a very affordable Cincinnati Guard Clint Boling and continue to allow Lelito to push Evans at right guard?

And on defense, why did we spend two draft picks to get a Nose Tackle in John Jenkins because of his grand size only to have him lose fifty pounds so he can play a 3-tech?!?

Square Pegs/Round Holes

Byrd is actually playing pretty well. I think we have a player in him. Yea it took a while to get him healthy but he is always near the ball.

Our offense is doing fine in spite of having and elderly Colston and basic no names besides Cooks. If our defense was middle of the pack we could be looking at only 1 or two losses.
An offense cant put up 40 plus points evert game and with this defense thats what they would have to do.
